Poland has chosen Franz, directed by Agnieszka Holland, as the country’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards.
Franz is a biographical film that follows the life of the 20th-century Czech writer Franz Kafka, from his birth in 19th-century Prague up to his premature death in 1924 in Vienna. It is based on the screenplay by Holland and Marek Epstein. The film stars Idan Weiss as Franz Kafka, with Jenovéfa Boková, Carol Schuler, Sebastian Schwarz, Katarina Stark, and Aaron Friesz.
Franz had its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, followed by its European Premiere at San Sebastian International Film Festival, where it is in the running for the Golden Shell for Best Film.

Franz bested other finalists including Chopin, Chopin! by Michal Kwiecinski; Good House by Wojciech Smarzowski; Two Sisters by Lukasz Karwowski; Letters from Wolf Street by Arjun Talwar; Trains by Maciej J. Drygas; and VINCI 2 by Juliusz Machulski.
The Polish Film Institute confirmed the choice of Franz, with the Oscar committee comprised of Ewa Puszczynska (Chairman of the Oscar Committee); Agatha Dominik; Kamila Dorbach; Bartosz Konopka; Joanna Kos-Krauze; Hanna Raniszewska; Katarzyna Sobanska; Krzysztof Spór; Krzysztof Terej; and Grażyna Torbicka.
