The film tells the story of Tracii, an operations director of an abortion clinic in Atlanta, Georgia, where the fight for reproductive rights plays out in real time. After Roe v. Wade was overturned back in 2022, women from all over the country have found their way to Tracii’s clinic to get abortions. Audiences watch as women are met with severe hostility for exercising their right to bodily autonomy.

As the head of the clinic’s security, Tracii works to ensure the safety of these clients, fighting any obstacles these women may face, as well as protecting them from relentless pro-life protesters at her doorstep. She calms anxious patients, does daily building checks and briefings with private security to managing patient anonymity, and escorts clients through hostile environments.

Tracii’s unwavering commitment to her patients reflects both compassion and resolve, while also laying bare the hardships that define the everyday realities of reproductive healthcare in America. The film is an intimate portrait of resilience, an immersive and undeniable truth, and a reminder of the narrowing opportunities for abortion access across the United States.

In an interview with American Documentary Film Festival and Film Fund, Hampton says, “It’s not just reproductive rights, it’s human rights. At the end of the day it’s healthcare. And everyone should have the right and the choice to make decisions about their bodies and their healthcare without any government or anyone making those decisions for them.”

According to Warner Bros., the documentary short is “Grounded in humanity and empathy, The Devil is Busy is a clear-eyed portrayal of the shifting landscape for patients and abortion providers in America today.”
