Based on the Outside magazine article “The Last Days of John Allen Chau” by Alex Perry, Last Days follows 26-year-old Christian missionary John Allen Chau (Sky Yang) as he embarks on a dangerous journey to contact the isolated Sentinelese people on North Sentinel Island in the Indian Ocean. At the same time, a detective from the Andaman Islands (played by Radhika Apte) races to stop him before harm can occur — to himself or to the tribe.

At Sundance, Justin Lin described his first reaction to the story, saying “When I first heard [about what happened to Chau], I had a very strong reaction to it..”

He continued, “This Asian American face popped up, and of course I was imposing all of my personal issues right on top of that. And the last thing that really affected me was that John Allen Chau was 26 years old, and I was thinking, ‘That is somebody’s son. That is somebody’s brother,’ and it really stuck with me.”
