Cambodia’s Oscar Submission ‘Tenement’ Sets US Release Date and Drops Trailer

Cambodia has selected Tenement, co-directed by Inrasothythep Neth and Sokyou Chea, as its Oscars submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards.

Tenement is described as a folk-horror / psychological thriller. The plot follows Soriya (Thanet Thorn), a Cambodian-Japanese manga artist who returns to Cambodia after her mother’s death, moving into her mother’s old apartment. There, she encounters strange happenings in the building’s community: overzealous neighbors, haunted memories, and a ritualistic undercurrent tied to the building’s past.

Also starring in the movie are Yoshihiko Hosoda, Socheata Sveng, Mony Rous, Katsuya Maiguma

Tenement had its world premiere at the 2024 International Film Festival Rotterdam in the Big Screen Competition section. It opens in theaters and on VOD on October 24th, 2025.

Here is the full synopsis: Following the death of her mother, a Japanese-Cambodian manga artist decides to travel to Cambodia along with her boyfriend, in a quest to find out more about the country her mother fled. She reunites with lost family and moves into the apartment where her mother used to live. As she tries to find out more about her past, she’s confronted to strange events within the building that hint at something darker going on with the residents. What first appears as over-caring considerations from the community towards the new comers soon turns out to be part of a ritual. The residents are preparing a new host for the building’s evil spirit, before it starts killing them once again.
