Grief and horror converge in We Bury the Dead, the zombie thriller film starring Daisy Ridley as Ava, a wife desperate to find her missing husband after a catastrophic military experiment.
Also starring in the movie are Brenton Thwaites, Mark Coles Smith, and Matt Whelan.
Written and directed by Zak Hilditch, We Bury the Dead premiered at South by Southwest (SXSW) film festival, followed by the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF 2025). It opens in U.S. theaters on January 2, 2026, via Vertical Entertainment.
Starring Daisy Ridley, Brenton Thwaites and Mark Coles Smith, the story unfolds after a catastrophic American military experiment results in mass casualties across Tasmania. Ava (Ridley) joins a body retrieval unit to help identify the dead and search for her husband on the southern part of the island. As Ava makes her way south, across the ravaged landscape, she soon learns that some of the victims of the disaster are coming back to life.
The critical reception so far has been largely positive, with IndieWire grading the film a B-, saying “Overall, the craft of the movie is top-notch, with compelling performances, urgent pacing, and gorgeous cinematography.” It added, “But for a movie about stinking, bloated corpses, on the whole, this one is surprisingly fresh.”
