Bugonia, the dark comedy satirical film from Yorgos Lanthimos, stars Emma Stone as a powerful pharmaceutical CEO who becomes the target of two conspiracy-obsessed men, played by Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis.
Also starring in the movie are Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone. This is Stone’s fourth and Plemons’ second time working with Lanthimos.
Bugonia made its world premiere at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, followed by Telluride, San Sebastián, Philadelphia, Savannah Fest, AFI Fest, and more. It opens in select theaters on October 24, and everywhere on October 31, 2025.
Here’s the official synopsis of Bugonia: Two conspiracy-obsessed young men kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.
Emma Stone plays Michelle Fuller, the pharmaceutical CEO at the center of the kidnapping. Jesse Plemons plays Teddy, one of the conspiracists.
The film is a satirical, absurdist sci-fi black comedy, itself an English-language remake of the 2003 South Korean cult classic Save the Green Planet! by Jang Joon-hwan.
Lanthimos has spoken about how he responded to the script and its resonance with present day, saying “I have never before been given a script that felt so ready to be made.
He added, “I just thought it was so funny and entertaining but also extremely impactful and made you really think about things deeply. I immediately was interested in making it. It felt very relevant then and that was three years ago and it feels even more relevant now.”
Deadline review praised Bugonia as a bold, provocative film, writing, “Bugonia may be way out there, but I haven’t seen a film this year that feels as much of the moment for a world spinning out of control. It is indeed pure entertainment, but we should pay attention to what it is trying to say.”
