Diane Keaton, the Oscar-winning actress known for starring in Annie Hall and The Godfather, has died in California at the age of 79, according to a family spokesperson.

Born Diane Hall on January 5, 1946, in Los Angeles, she adopted her mother’s maiden name for her professional career. Over more than five decades, she became one of Hollywood’s most beloved leading ladies, equally adept at comedy and drama.

Keaton first gained major attention when she was cast as Kay Adams in The Godfather (1972). She reprised that role in The Godfather Part II (1974) and The Godfather Part III (1990). ut her collaboration with Woody Allen defined much of her public persona: Play It Again, Sam (1972), Sleeper (1973), Love and Death (1975), and ultimately Annie Hall (1977), for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. Her portrayal of Annie Hall became iconic—part romantic heroine, part neurotic everywoman—and cemented her reputation as a star who could mix wit, vulnerability, and style.

She continued working steadily across genres. Some of her notable films include Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977), Baby Boom (1987), The First Wives Club (1996), Something’s Gotta Give (2003), The Family Stone, Mack & Rita, and Maybe I Do.

Diane Keaton’s last released film was Summer Camp (2024), a comedy directed by Castille Landon. In it she starred alongside Kathy Bates and others in a story about old friends reuniting at a summer camp retreat. The film was released theatrically in the U.S. on May 31, 2024.

Beyond acting, Keaton also directed films: Heaven (1987), Hanging Up (2000), and others, showcasing her desire to tell stories even from behind the camera.
