After premiering at Sundance to critical acclaim, Selena y Los Dinos, the documentary film on legendary singer Selena Quintanilla comes to Netflix on November 17th.
The documentary reveals the rise of Selena from those closest to her — her parents, Marcella and Abraham, sister Suzette, brother A.B. III, husband Chris, and bandmates.
Directed by Isabel Castro, with Selena’s sister, Suzette Quintanilla as executive producer, Selena y Los Dinos premiered at Sundance Film Festival, where it won a special jury award for Archival Storytelling, and was nominated for Best Documentary. It was also shown at South by South West Film Festival and Miami Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award and Best Documentary Award respectively.

The film tracks the family’s origins from dinnertime performances at their Tex Mex restaurant in Lake Jackson to their hard-won ascendence to the top of Tejano charts. It features countless hours of intimate moments and never-before seen footage chronicling Selena’s life, especially surrounding her family’s band, Los Dinos. It remembers who she was not only as a person, but as the “Queen of Tejano Music”—underlining how deep her impact ran to Latino audiences and eventually music listeners worldwide.
“She was a young woman whose life was cut too short. Something that most other films have never dealt with is looking at the way that her family has managed that grief,” said Castro in an interview with the International Documentary Association. “They lost their sun, you know? I think the Quintanilla family’s been misunderstood. In the wake of her death, they have really oriented their energy into trying to keep her memory alive.”
“What lingers is the complete sadness that this woman, who broke so much ground and was set to break so much more, is no longer present,” says Esther Zuckerman in her review of the doc for IndieWire. “In her family members’ and her bandmates’ faces, you can see how raw their sorrow still is. But “Selena y Los Dinos” is no mere tribute, it is a vibrant argument for Selena’s humanity, as well as her status as a legend.” Zuckerman speaks at length about this, praising the film for its choice to focus on Selena’s life rather than her tragic death.
