Set in a future where humanity has surrendered its ability to dream in exchange for immortality, an outcast (Jackson Yee) finds illusion, nightmarish visions, and beauty in an intoxicating world of his own making. A work of staggering imagination from visionary Chinese director Bi Gan, Resurrection conjures vast and ever-shifting worlds on the brink of collapse in an era-spanning journey through our deepest and most human desires.

“I structured this monster’s soul into six chapters, mirroring the film’s own architecture,” Bi told Variety in an interview. The six elements — the five senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch) and the mind — provide the framework for the film’s chapters.

Variety review called the film a ‘phantasmagoric head-trip’, writing, “With all its extraordinarily intricate ambition, “Resurrection” is hardly what you could call a manifesto, and it will undoubtedly challenge viewers who have been trained to expect simpler structures. But for those who miss the way the movies used to act on us, it is a reminder of the uniquely paradoxical pleasures of immersion and surrender: a dazzlingly cineliterate lesson in the lost art of letting go.”
