HBO’s Music Box documentary series from Bill Simmons continues, and the next installment covers the legendary life of the late Jeff Buckley in It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley directed by Amy Berg..
It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley covers the life of the rising young star with an otherworldly voice and boundary-pushing artistry, who left the ‘90s music world reeling when he died suddenly at age 30 after the release of his critically acclaimed debut album Grace.
Told through never-before-seen footage from Buckley’s archives and intimate accounts from his mother Mary Guibert, former partners Rebecca Moore and Joan Wasser, and former bandmates, including Michael Tighe and Parker Kindred, It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley illuminates one of modern music’s influential and enigmatic figures.

It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley had its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival, followed by DOC NYC and Rome Film Festival. Magnolia Pictures and HBO Documentary Films picked up the film for a theatrical run across both the United States and Canada in August. The documentary will debut December 4th at 9:00 PM on HBO, also being available to stream on HBO Max.
David Fear from Rolling Stone praised the film and the dedication to its subject, “It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley, Amy Berg’s long-in-the-making portrait of the late, great singer, feels like it’s consistently walking a fine line between doubling down on the easy lionizing and drawing your attention back to Buckley the Artist, rather than Buckley the Brooding Boho Thirst Trap Who Could Hit a High C. Her love for his work is genuine, to be sure. So is the love for the person that many of the interviewees here reminisce about.”
