Mamoru Hosoda’s ‘Scarlet’ Gets IMAX-First Launch by Sony Pictures Classics

Sony Pictures Classics is giving audiences an early look at Mamoru Hosoda’s newest epic, Scarlet, unveiling an IMAX-exclusive rollout that spotlights the film’s scale and emotional sweep.

The studio will debut the subtitled version of the animated feature in IMAX theaters on February 6, ahead of a nationwide expansion on February 13, when both subtitled and dubbed editions will arrive in standard formats.

Before its wide release, Scarlet will complete a one-week qualifying run in IMAX across 10 cities beginning December 12, a limited engagement aimed at showcasing the film’s craftsmanship on the largest screens possible.

Scarlet arrives with significant festival acclaim, having premiered at the Venice International Film Festival before screening at both the Toronto and New York Film Festival.

From visionary filmmaker Hosoda comes a powerful, time-bending animated adventure about Scarlet, a medieval-era, sword fighting princess on a dangerous quest to avenge the death of her father. After failing at her mission and finding herself gravely injured in the Otherworld that exists somewhere between life and death, she encounters an idealistic young man from our present day who not only helps her to heal but shows her the possibility of a future free of bitterness and rage.

When confronted again by her father’s killer, Scarlet faces her most daunting battle: can she break the cycle of hatred and find meaning in life beyond revenge?

Hosoda says, “There’s that very famous line, ‘To be or not to be,’ and I tried to imagine what that same question would look like in today’s words and visual expression.”
