Director and actor Rob Reiner and his wife, producer Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead Sunday in their Los Angeles home, authorities and family sources said. The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the deaths as an apparent homicide.

Rob Reiner was 78 and Michele Singer Reiner was 68. Firefighters responded to a medical aid call around 3:30 p.m. in the Brentwood neighborhood, where they found two bodies, a law enforcement source told reporters. Investigators believe the pair suffered fatal stab wounds. Police have not yet identified a suspect and are continuing their inquiry.

Rob Reiner first gained fame as an actor portraying Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the television sitcom All in the Family in the 1970s, a role that earned him two Emmy Awards and made him a familiar face in American homes. He later transitioned behind the camera and built a distinguished directing career.

As a director Reiner helmed a series of landmark films that left a lasting imprint on American cinema. His 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap became a cultural touchstone for comedy. He followed with beloved works such as Stand By Me, a coming-of-age drama adapted from Stephen King’s work, the romantic classic When Harry Met Sally…, and The Princess Bride, a fantasy adventure that has endured among audiences of all ages. Reiner also directed successful courtroom drama A Few Good Men and adaptations such as Misery and The American President.

Michele Singer Reiner built her own creative career as a producer, with credits including producing documentaries and collaborating with her husband on various projects. She was also known for her earlier work as a photographer. Together the couple was deeply engaged in the creative community and in social activism.

Rob Reiner’s last released film credit came in 2025 with Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, a sequel to the original mockumentary, which was released earlier in the year.

SAG-AFTRA President Sean Astin issued a statement, “Rob Reiner is one of the most significant figures in the history of film and television. The impact he made on American culture simply can’t be overstated. Tributes will pour in and the impossibly long list of genre defining films and indelible performances will play in our minds and hearts. Rob Reiner was a member of our union for nearly 60 years. We send love and warmth to Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner’s families, friends and colleagues. Our entertainment community and audiences around the world will mourn deeply. On a personal note, so many of Mr. Reiner’s films and performances made me think, made me emotional and especially they made me laugh really hard. That’s how I will remember him.”
