Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of actor and filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, has been taken into custody in connection with the deaths of his parents in their Los Angeles home, authorities and multiple news outlets report.
Rob Reiner, 78, known for directing and starring in iconic films and television, including This Is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally, Stand by Me and A Few Good Men, and Michele Singer Reiner, 68, were found deceased at their Brentwood residence on Sunday, December 14, after the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical emergency call at approximately 3:30 p.m. local time. The couple’s bodies were discovered inside the home by their daughter, Romy, law enforcement told reporters.
Initial reports indicate both victims suffered wounds consistent with a knife attack, and the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division has classified the incident as a homicide. According to People, deputies later took Nick Reiner into custody in connection with the investigation and he is being held on $4 million bail while authorities continue to review the case.
Nick Reiner has publicly discussed his longstanding struggles with substance abuse and periods of homelessness, experiences that served as inspiration for the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, which he co-wrote and which his father directed.
The Reiner family released a statement expressing profound sorrow over the tragedy and asking for privacy during this difficult time. Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment industry, where Rob Reiner’s contributions to film and television were widely celebrated.
