Dreams follows Fernando, a young and talented ballet dancer from Mexico who dreams of international success and a life in the United States. Convinced that his lover, Jennifer McCarthy, will help him achieve that dream, Fernando embarks on a perilous journey across the border, narrowly surviving the crossing only to upend the carefully managed life Jennifer has built in San Francisco. As their relationship deepens and the imbalance of power becomes more pronounced, the film shifts from intimate drama to a broader meditation on class, culture, and control.

Michel Franco on reuniting with Jessica Chastain after starring in his most recent film Memory, said, “And during Memory on a lunch break, without realizing, I talked to her about the next movie. It really wasn’t pitching! I told her I had this idea for a film. At the time it had no dance, no ballet, in it. The other elements were pretty much in place. And she said yes, of course I’ll do it, because we were both enjoying ourselves very much.”

The Guardian review gave the film described as a ‘chilling and pessimistic drama’ 4 of 5 stars, writing, “It’s a really involving picture which beckons you hypnotically towards the tacit promise of a sensationally unhappy and violent denouement, and of course Franco is unlikely to deliver any other kind.”
