Writer-director Nastasya Popov makes her feature-length debut with Idiotka, a wildly satirical and heartfelt comedy film crafted around an energetic story about ambition, identity, and the messy realities of chasing success.
Led by Anna Baryshnikov as Margarita Levlansky and Camila Mendes as Nicol Garcia, Idiotka follows an aspiring fashion designer from West Hollywood’s Russian immigrant community who enters a high-stakes reality TV fashion competition in hopes of saving her family’s home.
Also starring in the film are Owen Thiele, Benito Skinner, Saweetie, Julia Fox, and Galina Jovovich.
Idiotka premiered at the 2025 South by Southwest (SXSW) Film & TV Festival, then went on to screen at SFFILM Festival and Palm Springs International Film Festival. Utopia will release Idiotka in the United States, where it is slated to hit theaters on February 27, 2026.

Here is the synopsis of Idiotka: In this sharp and irreverent comedy, a disgraced fashion designer with a dangerously low credit score, Margarita (Anna Baryshnikov), enters a high-stakes reality competition offering a six-figure cash prize to save her babushka’s West Hollywood apartment. As the competition intensifies, slick producer Nicol (Camila Mendes) pushes her to spin her family’s struggles into spectacle, forcing Margarita to decide whether to play along or take back control of her own narrative, one unhinged look at a time.
Director Nastasya Popov has spoken about her thematic intentions behind Idiotka, emphasizing the film’s critique of reality television culture and its demands on personal authenticity. In an interview, Popov explained that she wanted to dig into “questions of self-exploitation and how much of ourselves we expose as storytellers and artists.”
In a review on Hyperreal Film Club, the film was praised for its bold delivery, writing “It’s balanced, well-adjusted and bold in its delivery—and in her feature debut as a director, Popov delivers one hell of a calling card. Idiotka proves that you don’t need massive names to make things funny, and you don’t need massive dollars to make things feel genuine.”
