Here is the official synopsis of Girls Like Girls: Based on writer/director Hayley Kiyoko’s hit single and best-selling novel of the same name, Girls Like Girls is a heartfelt coming-of-age story set over the course of one sun-drenched summer, where new-girl-in-town Coley falls in love for the first time while learning to accept herself along the way. Written by Kiyoko alongside Stefanie Scott, the screenplay brings depth and nuance to this tale of love found and identity revealed, highlighting both tender romance and the challenges of vulnerability in youth.
Director Hayley Kiyoko has spoken passionately about what this project means to her and why it was so important to bring this particular story to the screen. Reflecting on the long creative journey from song to film, Kiyoko explained “Since I released ‘Girls Like Girls’ in 2015, I’ve made a vow to myself and to you all to do everything in my power to create hopeful queer content at the largest scale possible. The road map has never been clear, I’ve just kept believing that if I kept trying, that one day a road could be paved. We made it. It’s here.”
