Director Pete Ohs’ latest film Erupcja is a romantic drama with a whimsical twist.
Adapted from a collaboratively written screenplay by Ohs, Charli XCX, Lena Góra, Jeremy O. Harris, and Will Madden, the movie stars Charli XCX as Bethany, a British visitor in Warsaw whose planned getaway turns into something far more introspective and unpredictable after a volcanic eruption interrupts her holiday.
Alongside XCX, Lena Góra plays Nel, Bethany’s old friend whose chemistry with Bethany complicates relationships and stirs long-held feelings. Jeremy O. Harris and Will Madden round out the cast, all contributing both in front of and behind the camera to this evocative anti-romantic comedy.
Erupcja (Polish for eruption) debuted at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival in the Centrepiece section, and is now set for a U.S. theatrical release on April 17, 2026.
Set in Poland, Erupcja follows two women as they complicate their romantic lives. Nel lives in Warsaw where she works at a flower shop. When her childhood friend Bethany comes to visit with a new boyfriend, a volcano erupts. The story unfolds as Bethany and Nel reconnect, sparking emotional reactions that ripple through their relationships and challenge their expectations about love, connection, and personal direction. While a literal volcanic eruption overshadows their time together, the greater upheaval occurs within their hearts and choices.
Director Pete Ohs has discussed his creative process on Erupcja, saying, “Every time I make a film, I experiment with genre in some way. I’ve moved from sci-fi fantasy to quirky comedy to supernatural horror. But after moving from Los Angeles to Warsaw at the end of 2023, I realized I had now gained direct access to one of my favorite genres – the ‘foreign film.’ There’s something so unique about watching a movie that is in a different language from your own. You receive it differently. Constantly glancing at the bottom of the screen to read subtitles affects how you feel about the acting, the cinematography, the editing. By making my own foreign film, I was excited to find out what was lost and found in translation.”
