Eric Dane, Actor Known for Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, Dies at 53

Eric Dane, the television and film actor known for starring in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has died at the age of 53.

Dane passed away on February 19, 2026, after a courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a neurological disease he had publicly disclosed in April 2025. His family said he died surrounded by loved ones, including his wife and daughters

Born in San Francisco on November 9, 1972, Dane began acting in the early 1990s with guest appearances on series including Saved by the Bell and The Wonder Years. He rose to prominence for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan, affectionately known as “McSteamy,” on the long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy.

In addition to Grey’s Anatomy, Dane had significant television roles that showcased his range, notably as Captain Tom Chandler in the TNT series The Last Ship and as Cal Jacobs in the acclaimed HBO drama Euphoria. In Euphoria he portrayed a complicated father figure, a role that earned critical praise.

Although television defined much of his public profile, Dane also maintained an active film career. He appeared in major studio pictures and independent films, including the blockbuster X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), where he played Jamie Madrox/Multiple Man, the family comedy Marley & Me (2008), the ensemble romantic comedy Valentine’s Day (2010), and the crime thriller Little Dixie (2023), in which he starred alongside Frank Grillo.

Dane continued working into the mid-2020s, appearing in action and drama projects with his last released films in 2024 included roles in Bad Boys: Ride or Die and One Fast Move. He was also attached to several 2025 projects at the time of his death.

Beyond his screen work, Dane became an advocate for ALS awareness following his diagnosis, using his platform to highlight the disease and the need for research and support. He is survived by his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters.
