In Mother’s Baby, the psychological drama-thriller from Austrian filmmaker Johanna Moder, the line becomes blurred between maternal joy and creeping paranoia.
It stars Marie Leuenberger as Julia, a 40-year-old orchestra conductor whose long-awaited dream of starting a family takes a harrowing turn.
Alongside Leuenberger, the cast includes Hans Löw as her partner Georg, and Claes Bang as the enigmatic fertility specialist Dr. Vilfort, whose experimental treatment delivers results — in ways Julia never anticipated.
Mother’s Baby first premiered in competition at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival, and is now slated for a U.S. theatrical release on March 6, 2026, via Dark Sky Films.

In the film, Julia, a successful 40-year-old conductor, and her partner, Georg, long to become parents, eventually conceiving after successful treatment at the fertility clinic of Dr. Vilfort. But complications during the birth led to their newborn being taken from Julia without explanation. When she is finally reunited with her baby, she experiences a disturbing sense of emotional detachment. As the distance between Julia and her child grows, she begins to doubt whether the baby in her arms is truly hers. This gripping premise serves as the backbone for an eerie story.
Director Johanna Moder has spoken about the emotional heart of Mother’s Baby and its commentary on societal expectations of motherhood. In an interview around its Berlinale premiere, Moder explained, “My film is about the challenge of dealing with the expectations of motherhood and finding yourself.”
