2013 Vancouver International Film Festival Award Winners; “RHYMES FOR YOUNG GHOULS” “THAT BURNING FEELING” Win Best Canadian First Feature Award

RHYMES FOR YOUNG GHOULS by Jeff BarnabyRHYMES FOR YOUNG GHOULS is described by the festival as a very powerful and beautifully produced film, with a stellar cast and excellent photography and design. Depicting the aftereffects of the trauma inflicted by residential schools on the First Nations population, it also succeeds in telling a universal and touching story of an oppressed people trying to survive, rebuild and come to terms with their suffering. Using a highly creative vocabulary, from realistic to metaphorical, from fantastic to poetic, Jeff Barnaby demonstrates a promising and already impressive talent as a filmmaker.
THAT BURNING FEELING is noted as one of the best comedies the jury has seen in a long time. With a witty, smart and highly-articulate script, a talented cast and beautiful production, it makes for a wonderful self-deprecating portrait of Vancouver, with its condo maniacs, yoga lovers, community activists and other odd characters. While making us laugh along the way, it tells the human story of trying to find authenticity in a crazy world. Jason James is a rising filmmaker to watch with his wit, keen eye and intelligence.

Australia’s Delphi Bank Greek Film Festival Launches 2013 Program; Opens With “WHAT IF…”
Christoforos Papakaliatis in “WHAT IF…”Celebrating its 20th anniversary the 2013 Greek Film Festival (GFF) has announced its full program of films, many of which have made their mark on the international film festival circuit. This year’s festival slate once again presents the best of contemporary Greek cinema with a program that will see 35 films including 9 shorts screen at the Palace Como in Melbourne and Palace Chauvel in Sydney. The festival will open in Brisbane on Thursday 31 October at Palace Centro, followed by Sydney on Wednesday 6 November and in Melbourne on Thursday 7 November with Greece’s box office smash hit, WHAT IF… The GFF then continues its tour to Adelaide (14 – 17 November at Palace Nova Eastend) and Canberra (29 November – 14 December at Palace Electric).
An adonis of the small screen, Christoforos Papakaliatis makes his leap to the big screen as both actor and auteur in a story about love set against the backdrop of the economic crisis. In a Sliding Doors style of storytelling WHAT IF… highlights the precarious nature of life and how much our future can be affected by a single life-changing decision.
Over two weeks later the captivating financial thriller, CAPITAL (Le Capital), will close the festival in Sydney and Melbourne on Sunday 24 November. In this ambitious and thrilling melodrama which screened at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, filmmaker Costas-Gavras (known for his political thrillers, including the Oscar-winning Z) returns to familiar territory with this persuasively-detailed tale of boardroom politics, remorseless backstabbing and the evils of capitalism.
Alongside the full program Eleni Bertes has also been announced as a guest of the festival. Eleni is one of the former founders of the GFF in Australia and is currently producing films in Greece, including Joy which is part of this year’s program – a startling narrative from director Ilias Yannakakis, who recounts the story of a middle-aged woman accused of kidnapping a newborn baby from a maternity ward.
From the Greek Weird Wave the GFF screens Elina Psykou’s self-assured debut – THE ETERNAL RETURN OF ANTONIS PARASKEVAS. This engaging off-beat film played at this year’s Berlinale and Toronto IFF and follows a famous Greek TV anchorman played by Christos Stergioglou (Dogtooth, GFF ‘10) who fakes his own kidnapping in a desperate bid to salvage his ailing career. Also from Toronto the GFF brings veteran editor Yannis Sakaridis’s directing debut WILD DUCK, shot on a micro-budget, guerrilla-style in the wake of the country’s 2009 debt crisis. Smart, introspective and politically charged, the story loosely parallels the 2005 ‘Greek Watergate’ phone-tapping scandal when a pair of telephone engineers are enlisted to investigate a hacking.
There’s a strong documentary contingent in this year’s program too; Director Kostas Vakkas challenges the dominant stereotype of success and entrepreneurism in Greek American history in his direct and highly informative documentary, GREEK AMERICAN RADICALS: THE UNTOLD STORY. Much more than just a story about politics, Dimitris Athyridis’ ONE STEP AHEAD is a poignant documentary odyssey following the unconventional Yiannis Boutaris as he stands for independent candidate in the 2010 mayoral campaign of Thessaloniki. The GFF will also be holding a special free event screening of Zoe Mavroudi’s incendiary documentary RUINS, which chronicles the shockingly blatant witch-hunt of a group of HIV positive women accused of prostitution.
Greece’s creative talents are also featured in the beautiful and gripping family drama THE TREE AND THE SWING, from director Maria Douza, who delivers a powerful, multi-layered tale of one family’s estrangement, channelling universal themes of acceptance, love and repentance. Other festival highlights include Vasilis Kehagias’ uplifting LOVE IN THE END, where three real-life stories of unfulfilled love get the happy ending they never had; the poignant DO NOT FORGET ME ISTANBUl, where seven talented filmmakers of different nationalities come together in a portmanteau feature to remind audiences that this cosmopolitan city does not only belong to the Turkish people; and one of the most unique films of the 2013 GFF – BIG HIT – a noir ‘dead ringer’ from filmmaker Karolos Zonaras, which features femme fatales, tough guys, pithy one-liners, long shadows and dramatic music stings.
As part of the 20th anniversary celebration the GFF has selected nine festival favorites to be included in this year’s special ‘best of’ program strand. The films include the multi award winning narrative A TOUCH OF SPICE – a nostalgia-steeped parable from writer-director Tassos Boulmetis, that touched the hearts of all who saw it becoming the biggest hit at the Greek box office; FEMALE COMPANY from director Nicos Perakis, which follows six emotionally-deprived, sexually-underrated wives who take matters into their own hands by renting an apartment where amorous activities abound in this lively satire; and Sotiris Goritsas’ tragi-comic road movie BALKANISATEUR which follows 35 year-old ‘teenagers’, Fotis (Stelios Mainas) and Stavros (Gerasimos Skiadaresis), on a misguided highway to Switzerland as they plan to get rich quick through a currency scam.
Lighten up your days with a wonderful selection of Greek comedy favourites from over the years including the comedy classic, BONUS, from acclaimed filmmaker Nikos Zapatinas, who proves that some laughs are universal in this infinitely appealing film about a garbage collector on the brink of retirement; Zapatinas’ Greek comedy blockbuster IN GOOD COMPANY is also featured in the ‘best of’ program, where raunchy and scatological misadventures unfold when a madman and petty criminal’s worlds collide; and the return of filmmaker Dimitris Indares’ uncomplicated and very human comedy, TOTALLY MARRIED, which wrestles with the much-debated phenomenon of the ‘seven year itch’, but does it Greek-style.
Acclaimed filmmaker Constantinos Giannaris will also feature two of his films in the ‘best of’ program. FROM THE EDGE OF THE CITY follows the leader of a gang of Kazakhstani youths who live on the outskirts of Athens – where clubbing, drugs, prostitution and petty thievery is an everyday part of life. Giannaris’ gritty depiction of this urban reality won him Best Director and the Greek Film Critics’ Prize at the Thessaloniki IFF. Realist tones continue in Giannaris’ poignant narrative ONE DAY IN AUGUST which weaves together four different stories over 24 eventful hours. The film screened at Berlin, Chicago and Melbourne and won best screenplay at Troy and the Critics’ Prize in Thessaloniki.
The GFF program also houses a selection of nine Greek shorts including, Athina Rachel Tsangari’s (Attenberg, GFF ‘11) hauntingly beautiful short THE CAPSULE which has screened in numerous festivals including Toronto and Sundance and YOU KNOW WHAT? I LOVE YOU – a debut from Melbourne filmmaker Natalie Cunningham, a joyous meditation on family, heartbreak, adversity, and memory. The eight local shorts will screen in one program as part of the Greek-Australian Short Film Festival on Thursday 21 November, competing for the Napoleon Perdis Award for Best Short Film.
The Greek Student Film Festival and Competition returns for its 4th year in 2013, presenting another selection of imaginative films from local primary, secondary and tertiary students.
The 20th Delphi Bank Greek Film Festival runs 6-24 November at Palace Chauvel Cinema in Sydney and 7-24 November at Palace Cinema Como in Melbourne. It also tours nationally, with dates in Brisbane (31 October – 3 November) Adelaide (14 – 17 November) and Canberra (29 November – 14 December).

Martin Scorsese to Head Competition Jury at 2013 Marrakech International Film Festival
The 13th Marrakech International Film Festival will be held in Marrakech, Morocco, from November 29 to December 7, 2013. Martin Scorsese has been announced as President of the main Competition Jury for the festival. “I am very happy to be this year’s jury president at the Marrakech Film Festival and I would like to thank HRH, Prince Moulay Rachid, President of the Festival, for his gracious invitation. I have made two films in Morocco, during which time I came to admire the spirit of the Moroccan people and the beauty of their culture. I am eager to discover the movies coming from all around the world to this unique Festival.”
The festival will continue its work spotlighting talents by paying tribute to filmmaking in Scandinavia. Since its beginnings, the festival has acted as a showcase for the quality and diversity of Scandinavian cinema, through the selection of Nordic films in competition, and by recognizing the Danish movie A HIJACKING by Tobias Lindholm in 2012 with the Jury Prize and Best Actor Award for Søren Malling. A major delegation of actors, directors and producers will be in Marrakech to receive this tribute to Scandinavian cinema at a gala presentation on Wednesday December 4, 2013.

First Philadelphia International Children’s Film Festival Announces Film Lineup; ZARAFA is Opening Night Film
ZARAFA directed by Rémi Bezançon, Jean-Christophe LieThe first Philadelphia International Children’s Film Festival (PICFF), will run November 15 to 17, 2013 at the newly renovated PFS Theater at the Roxy, and will offer a variety of animated, live-action and experimental short and feature films from all around the world. Opening night festival brings to Philadelphia the hand-animated film, ZARAFA, directed by Rémi Bezançon and Jean-Christophe Lie, based on the true story of the first giraffe to travel to France. Palm Springs Cultural Center Adds The Stanley Kramer Film Festival To It’s Annual List of Programs and Events
The Palm Springs Cultural Center announced a new addition to its annual line-up of cultural programs and special events. The Stanley Kramer Film Festival will debut at Camelot Theatres on Friday, November 15th and run through Sunday, November 17th, 2013. The 2013 event, which is designed to coincide with other Stanley Kramer Centennial events taking place this year, will include special screenings of six of Stanley Kramer’s best-known films. It will also feature special events, and special appearances with actress Karen Sharpe Kramer, Stanley Kramer’s widow, and his daughter, the actress and singer, Katharine “Kat” Kramer.
“We are so thrilled that The Palm Springs Cultural Center has elected to create this annual celebration of Stanley’s films, as well as his legacy,” said Karen Sharpe Kramer. “And having it launch during his Centennial celebration makes it even more special to us.”
The inaugural edition of The Stanley Kramer Film Festival will open with 1958’s THE DEFIANT ONES, starring Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier as two escaped convicts who are shackled together, and must learn to get along in order to elude capture.
“THE DEFIANT ONES was ahead of its time, as were so many of Stanley’s films,” continued Karen Sharpe Kramer.“Set in the American South against the specter of segregation, the two men, one white and one black, are at first motivated to cooperate with one another purely to survive, but gradually, they begin to respect , and even like one another. This was powerful story-telling. Can you imagine that film playing in 1958?”
The second film in the schedule is 1967’s GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER, starring Spencer Tracy, Sidney Poitier, and Katharine Hepburn. The film contains what was, at the time, a rare positive representation of the controversial subject of interracial marriage (which was still illegal in 17 states), right up until June 12, 1967, when the Supreme Court struck them down ( just two days after Tracy died). “Katharine Hepburn never saw the completed version of GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER,” said Katharine “Kat” Kramer (Hepburn’s god-daughter and namesake). “She said the memories of Spencer Tracy were just too painful for her.”
THE WILD ONE (1953), starring then-heartthrob, Marlon Brando, opens Saturday’s Festival schedule. Often lauded as the first of the “outlaw biker film” movie genre, THE WILD ONE provides a gritty, somewhat romanticized version of the lives and loves of the rebel motorcycle-riding clubs that became popular in California after World War Two. THE WILD ONE was based on a short story that loosely chronicled an actual event.
Saturday evening takes audiences from the world of outlaw gangs into the mad, mad world of comedy with the ever-popular film, IT’S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD. Produced and directed by Stanley Kramer in 1963, the epic comedy centers on the search, by a crazy and colorful group of characters, for $ 350,000 in stolen cash. Led by veteran actor Spencer Tracy, IT’S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD features an all-star ensemble cast, including the likes of Edie Adams, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Buddy Hackett, Ethel Merman, Mickey Rooney, Phil Silvers, Terry-Thomas, and Jonathan Winters.
Sunday morning, November 17th, opens with the powerful drama, JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG, which chronicles the events of the Holocaust, and the post-World War II complexities of the Nuremberg War Trials. Stanley Kramer produced and directed this monumental film, which stars such film greats as Spencer Tracy, Burt Lancaster, Richard Widmark, Maximilian Schell, Werner Klemperer, Marlene Dietrich, Judy Garland, William Shatner,and Montgomery Clift. JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG was nominated for eleven Academy Awards, won two (Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay), and earned Stanley Kramer the prestigious Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award.
The last film of the festival is THE CAINE MUTINY, starring Humphrey Bogart, Van Johnson, Jose Ferrer, and Fred MacMurray. Set during World War II, and based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Herman Wouk, THE CAINE MUTINY was a huge box office success in 1954, and received seven Oscar nominations. It has also been described as featuring Humphrey Bogart’s last great film performance. When the U.S. Navy was hesitant to endorse the film, it was almost lost to history. No studio, at the time, would touch it. Finally, Stanley Kramer, determined to tell the story, purchased the rights to Herman Wouk’s novel himself and set about to produce the film.“The 2013 The Stanley Kramer Film Festival will include a number of wonderful special events,” said Janie Hughes, Project Manager for the festival. “There’s a private Tea with the Kramers for All Access Passholders, an over the top pre-opening party, and a birthday celebration complete with a giant birthday cake. We plan on making this quite an event.”

2013 Manhattan Short Film Festival Winners, KIZMET DINER is Gold Medal Winner
KIZMET DINER KIZMET DINER, an 11-minute romantic love story directed by Mark Nunneley of England is the Gold Medal winner of the 16th annual Manhattan Short Film Festival. KIZMET DINER tells the tale of a singing waitress in a diner who finds the song that opens the heart of a disinterested customer. The Silver Medal went to PALE OF SETTLEMENT, directed by Jacob Sillman, an entry from the United States. Pale of Settlement chronicles the adventures of a 10-year-old boy trying to avoid conscription in the Russian army during the Crimean War.
The Bronze Medal went to I AM A GREAT BIG BALL OF SADNESS, another USA entry adapted from the stage play by Ken Urban and directed by Chris Tyler. The film pushes past the veneer presented by three guests at a cocktail party.
Reece Noi was voted Manhattan Short Best Actor for his portrayal of a young man coming to terms with the death of his mother in a terrorist bombing in the British short film FRIDAY.

2013 Brazilian Film and TV Festival of Toronto to Screen Over 40 Films, Opens with THE INVISIBLE COLLECTION
THE INVISIBLE COLLECTION by Bernard AttalThe 2013 BRAFFTV – Brazilian Film and TV Festival of Toronto taking place October 16th to October 20th, will feature a line-up of more than 40 films among features, documentaries, animation and shorts with the best recent Brazilian film productions from all genres including drama, comedy, documentary, thriller, children, and ethnographic films. The festival will open on October 16th with the Canadian premiere of the feature THE INVISIBLE COLLECTION by Bernard Attal and the short ENVIRONMENT OF FREEDOM by Pedro Barbosa and Mariana Martins.
The Competitive Program continues from October 17th to October 20th with 32 films (14 features and 18 short/mid-length films) competing for the Golden Maple Award. The Festival closes with the North-American premiere of the documentary MEETING SEBASTIÃO SALGADO directed by Betse de Paula depicting the life and work of one of the most celebrated photographers in the world, Sebastião Salgado.

GRAVITY to Open 2013 Leeds International Film Festival; Fest Announces Film Lineup
GRAVITY, starring George Clooney and Sandra BullockThe sci-fi drama GRAVITY, starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, will open the 27th Leeds International Film Festival (LIFF27) on Wednesday November 6, 2013. From Alfonso Cuarón, the director of Children of Men, Gravity is described as “a unique and unforgettable cinema experience about a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission with a veteran astronaut. On a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes.” Closing LIFF27 on Thursday November 21, 2013, is a rare screening of Hungarian director Gyórgy Pólfi’s unique FINAL CUT: LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, described as “an irresistible celebration of cinema, telling the ultimate love story using tiny excerpts from hundreds of movies ranging across film history.”
LIFF27 runs from Wednesday November 6th until Thursday 21st, and includes 163 feature films, short film programs and events, presented at over 250 screenings. The line-up is arranged across five main program sections: the Official Selection for previews and new discoveries; Retrospectives; Fanomenon for genre cinema; Cinema Versa for documentaries; and Short Film City.
The Official Selection includes some of the most acclaimed films of the year including the winner of the Palme d’Or at this year’s 2013 Cannes Film Festival, BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOUR. Other award winners in the Official Selection include Romanian drama CHILD’S POSE, which won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, Alexander Payne’s NEBRASKA (Best Actor for Bruce Dern) and Alain Guiraudie’s STRANGER BY THE LAKE (Un Certain Regard, Best Director).
The Official Selection also includes new discoveries, including Kazakh director Emir Baigazin’s debut HARMONY LESSONS and THE STRANGE LITTLE CAT from German film student Ramon Zürcher, a minimalist depiction of domestic mayhem over one day in a Berlin flat. Receiving its UK Premiere at Leeds, CONCRETE NIGHT is the latest feature from veteran Finnish filmmaker Pirjo Honkasalo, a drama about a teenage boy’s downfall.
LIFF27 retrospective program ranges from rare opportunities to rediscover forgotten gems to celebrated classics including Walerian Borowczyk, the Polish animator and avant-gardist and Japanese master,Masaki Kobayashi with rare cinema screenings of his samurai classics Hara-Kiri and Samurai Rebellion alongside his milestone Japanese wartime epic, the 579-minute THE HUMAN CONDITION.
The Fanomenon section is the home of cult and fantasy cinema and includes the South Korean action blockbuster COLD EYES, receiving its UK Premiere in Leeds, and a unique cinema presentation for the complete animated BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, screening with a brand new documentary about Frank Miller.
Cinema Versa focuses on documentary films showcases low budget, independent features: alternative music docs, grassroots political activist films and profiles of mavericks and outsiders. The Music on Film lineup ranges from the unconventional new tour film MISTAKEN FOR STRANGERS about indie darlings The National made by the singer’s brother to HARLEM STREET SINGER about the legendary ragtime guitarist Reverend Gary Davis, whose history mirrors that of popular music in the twentieth century. Underground Voices ranges in subject matter from everyday life in a war zone as filmed by a group of ordinary Afghans in MY AFGHANISTAN to the history of hand crafted sign painting in the USA in SIGN PAINTERS and a delegation of artists and scientists visiting the melting ice caps of Greenland in EXPEDITION TO THE END OF THE WORLD.
