Fatima Shaik in The Bengali directed by Kavery Kaul’s Fatima Shaik, an African-American author (Economy Hall) from New Orleans, and whose family has lived in Louisiana for four generations, embarks upon an unlikely quest from The Big Easy to a part of India where no African-American (or American) has ever gone. Her search for the past is fraught with uncertainty as she looks for her late grandfather Shaik Mohamed Musa’s descendants, land he claimed to own and the truth behind the stories she grew up with. Her incredible journey is told in award-winning filmmaker Kavery Kaul’s (Cuban Canvas, Long Way From Home) new feature documentary The Bengali.

Trine Dyrholm in Queen of Hearts The 63rd Lübeck Nordic Film Days (Nordische Filmtage Lübeck) will dedicate its homage section to Danish actor Trine Dyrholm and screen five of her key films. The celebrated actor will be on hand to accept her honorary award as part of the film festival’s opening night ceremonies on November 3 at the CineStar Lübeck. Her latest film “Margrete – Queen of the North”, directed by Charlotte Sieling, will be shown in Competition at the NFL, celebrating its German premiere on November 4.

Uppercase Print directed by Radu Jude The Romanian drama Uppercase Print by Radu Jude – winner of the 2021 Golden Bear for Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn – will open at the Metrograph in NYC on November 10, and at Laemmle Royal in LA on November 19. The film tells the true story of high school student Mugur Călinescu who was arrested in the early 1980s by Romania’s secret police agency for graffiti criticizing the regime of communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. Radu Jude also directed critically acclaimed Aferim! and “I Do Not Care If We Go Down In History As Barbarians.”

Goodbye Soviet Union The Fourth Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America returns in 2021 as a hybrid festival with both in-person and virtual screenings on November 3-14. This year, the festival will feature eleven feature films and one TV series with three International premieres, three North American premieres and one U.S. premiere, two New York premieres, and two East Coast premieres. Filmmakers will be in attendance to participate in Q&As after the screenings.
