The World Premiere of Music by John Williams, the documentary film on the prolific life and career of legendary composer John Williams, will open the 38th edition of AFI FEST.

Closing Dynasty directed by Lloyd Lee Choi won the Grand Jury Prize – Live Action Short at AFI FEST 2023. Other prizes went to Nǎi Nai & Wài Pó (Grandma & Grandma) (奶奶跟外婆)directed by Sean Wang won Grand Jury Prize – Documentary Short and Chutes directed by Kenzie Sutton won Grand Jury Prize – Animated Short.

AFI FEST Guest Artistic Director Greta Gerwig has revealed the five films she has curated for this year’s 37th edition of festival taking place in Los Angeles. Films include All That Jazz, An American In Paris, A Matter Of Life And Death, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure and Wings of Desire. Gerwig will introduce select films including A Matter Of Life And Death, as well as Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, which is set to screen in the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre on Thursday, October 26.

Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story an intimate portrait of the writer, actor, filmmaker, studio head and media mogul, will World Premiere as the Centerpiece Screening of AFI FEST 2023.

The World Premiere of the apocalyptic thriller Leave the World Behind, starring Academy Award® winner Julia Roberts, Academy Award® winner Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, Myha’la, Farrah Mackenzie, Charlie Evans and Kevin Bacon, will open the 37th edition of AFI Fest.

The American Film Institute (AFI) announced the dates for AFI FEST 2023.

AFI FEST 2022 announced the winners of the Jury awards with the Grand Jury Prize – Live Action Short going to Birds directed by Katherine Propper, Grand Jury Prize – Documentary Short went to Haulout directed by Evgenia Arbugaeva and Maxim Arbugaev, and Grand Jury Prize – Animated Short went to Sierra directed by Sander Joon. The Grand Jury Award winners for Live Action Short, Documentary Short and Animated Short will be eligible for the 2022 Best Live Action Short, Best Documentary Short and Best Animated Short Academy Awards®.

Filmmaker Ava DuVernay will serve as Guest Artistic Director at AFI Fest 2022 and has selected three independent films amplifying the voices and vision of women directors to showcase: Hellion (2014), directed by Kat Candler and starring Juliette Lewis and Aaron Paul; Mosquita y Mari (2012), directed by Aurora Guerrero; and Yelling to the Sky (2011), directed by Victoria Mahoney and starring Gabourey Sidibe and Zoë Kravitz. In addition to the screenings, Ava DuVernay will moderate a special panel with the directors, who are part of the historic all-women directorial roster for the acclaimed drama series Queen Sugar.
