Berlin International Film Festival will honor Oscar-winner Dame Helen Mirren with its Homage and award her the Honorary Golden Bear for her lifetime achievement.

The Berlinale Classics series of the 70th Berlin International Film Festival will celebrate its opening on February 21, 2020 at the Friedrichstadt-Palast with a screening of the 1924 silent film classic Waxworks directed by Paul Leni. Accompanied by new music from the Ensemble Musikfabrik from North Rhine-Westphalia, with Swiss-Australian conductor Elena Schwarz at the podium, this digital restoration under the aegis of the Deutsche Kinemathek and Cineteca di Bologna will be shown onscreen for the first time at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival.

The Retrospective of the 70th Berlin International Film Festival will be dedicated to the American film director, producer, and screenwriter King Vidor (1894-1982) who holds a central place in the history of US cinema. Considered a key director towards the end of the silent era and in the Golden Age of Hollywood, Vidor left a lasting mark, combining his interest in social engagement with the desire to explore in depth the potential of cinematic language.

On the final evening of Perspektive Deutsches Kino at 2019 Berlin International Film Festival, the Compass-Perspektive-Award 2019 for the best film was presented to the film Born in Evin by Maryam Zaree. The award is endowed with prize money, and as a trophy, the director received a real compass, which is intended to serve as symbolic orientation and show her the direction to take going into the future.

The 21st Panorama Audience Awards of the 2019 Berlin International Film Festival went to 37 Seconds for best fiction film and Talking About Trees for best documentary. The awards are presented by the Berlinale Panorama section.

A Colony (Une colonie) by Geneviève Dulude-De Celles of Canada was awarded the Crystal Bear for the Best Film in Generation Kplus by the Children’s Jury at the 2019 Berlin International Film Festival. The Grand Prix of the Generation Kplus International Jury for the Best Feature Film went to A First Farewell (Di yi ci de li bie) by Wang Lina, People’s Republic of China.

In a statement released today, the Berlin International Film Festival announced that due to technical difficulties encountered during post-production, Yi miao zhong (One Second) by Zhang Yimou unfortunately will not be presented on February 15 in the scope of the Competition section of the Berlinale. The competition will thus feature a total of 16 films vying for the coveted Bear awards.
