The Berlinale Forum of the Berlin International Film Festival is celebrating its anniversary: 50 years of dedication to independent, adventurous, daring cinema . With a compact program of eight films, the 2020 Perspektive Deutsches Kino program of the Berlin International Film Festival celebrates the world premieres of four outstanding feature films and four documentary films. The year 2020 will be the first time that Kino International will serve as the premiere screening cinema for Perspektive Deutsches Kino. All eight films compete for the Compass-Perspektive-Award, which is endowed with 5,000 €. The director Mia Spengler, the screenwriter Bernd Lange and the producer Melanie Andernach (MADE IN GERMANY) will decide on the prize for the best film in the program.

The Berlinale Short Film Competition of the 2020 Berlin Film Festival celebrates the artistic freedom of the short form with a wide range of topics and narrative styles showcasing 24 films from 18 countries.

The 2020 Berlinale which marks the 70th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival unveiled the festival poster which shines a light on the 70th anniversary. The Berlinale Classics series of the 70th Berlin International Film Festival will celebrate its opening on February 21, 2020 at the Friedrichstadt-Palast with a screening of the 1924 silent film classic Waxworks directed by Paul Leni. Accompanied by new music from the Ensemble Musikfabrik from North Rhine-Westphalia, with Swiss-Australian conductor Elena Schwarz at the podium, this digital restoration under the aegis of the Deutsche Kinemathek and Cineteca di Bologna will be shown onscreen for the first time at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival.

The Retrospective of the 70th Berlin International Film Festival will be dedicated to the American film director, producer, and screenwriter King Vidor (1894-1982) who holds a central place in the history of US cinema. Considered a key director towards the end of the silent era and in the Golden Age of Hollywood, Vidor left a lasting mark, combining his interest in social engagement with the desire to explore in depth the potential of cinematic language.
