More than 350 entries from 25 countries were submitted for review. To be eligible, the films must have been completed within the past year and under 20 minutes in length.

The Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival will take place September 5 to 10, 2017.   • 11 Finalists Selected for 2017 Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival Short Film Competition

More than 300 entries from 25 countries were submitted for review. To be eligible, the films must have been completed within the past year and be under 20 minutes in length. All eleven films will be screened the night of Saturday, September 9, at the Capawock Theater. At the conclusion of the shorts program, a panel of judges will announce the winning film. A cash prize of $1,000 will be awarded to the winning filmmaker(s).

    This year’s guest of honor is labor rights activist and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Dolores Huerta. She will take part in a discussion following a screening of Dolores, the new documentary about her life, fresh from the Sundance Film Festival. Eduardo Garcia, outdoor chef and subject of Charged: The Eduardo Garcia Story, will stir audiences with his story of transformation after the near-death experience of being jolted by 2,400 volts of electricity in Montana’s backcountry. In his new documentary City Of Ghosts, Vineyard resident Matthew Heineman (director of the Oscar-nominated Cartel Land) sheds light on the Syrian citizens-turned-activists who banded together after their hometown was taken over by ISIS. The March festival also includes award-winning films like I, Daniel Blake, winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and the BAFTA award for Outstanding British Film of the Year. Dean, the hilarious directorial debut from comedian Demetri Martin, won the Best Narrative Feature award at the Tribeca Film Festival. I Am Not Your Negro was nominated for this year’s Best Documentary Oscar. Blind Vaysha, part of the MVFF’s International Shorts program, was nominated for the Best Short Animation Oscar.

  • 10th Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival to Open with Funny Doc MEET THE PATELS | TRAILER

    MEET THE PATELS The 10th Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival will take place this year September 8 to 13, 2015.  There are two “pre-festival events” again this year. First, on Tuesday, September 8, is THE SALT OF THE EARTH, the Oscar-nominated documentary by director Wim Wenders, about Brazilian photographer Sebastiao Salgado, and on Wednesday, September 9, is AMY, the biopic about pop/jazz/blues artist Amy Winehouse. The official Opening Night kicks off with MEET THE PATELS (pictured above), the documentary by the brother-sister team of Geeta and Ravi Patel which plays like a comedy, and traces the misadventures of 30-year-old Ravi Patel as his parents, desperate to see him married, escort him back to India to find a proper bride. Closing night is the Italian comedy BUONI A NULLA (GOOD FOR NOTHING). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7litSYXbpRs The festival’s lineup includes dozens of films, documentaries, dramas and comedies, including the acclaimed family drama ABERDEEN, from Hong Kong and a quirky Swedish film, THE 100 YEAR OLD MAN WHO CLIMBED OUT THE WINDOW AND DISAPPEARED. Director Genevieve Bailey interviewed eleven-year-old girls from many countries and all walks of life for I AM ELEVEN. From France there is UNE NOUVELLE AMIE (THE NEW GIRLFRIEND), and from Israel the comedy ZERO MOTIVATION. Dramas and documentaries from Mexico, Norway, Australia, the USA and Caribbean round out the features program. Saturday, short films are the focus, with two popular forums returning.     Martha's Vineyard International Film Festival Announces Finalists in Its 2013 Short-Film Competition

    Nine finalists have been selected for the fourth annual Short Film contest sponsored by the Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival. Festival director, and Martha’s Vineyard Film Society founder, Richard Paradise says over 300 entries were submitted this year to the contest. There is a cash prize of $500 for the maker of the winning film, which will be announced the evening of Friday, September 6, following a showcase screening of all the finalists. The winning film will also be screened on Closing Night.

    This year’s nine finalists include shorts from the UK, Israel, Australia, Ireland, Syria, and the United States.

    The finalists include:

    “HEAD OVER HEELS,” an animated film from the UK that was nominated for Best Animated Short at the 2013 Oscars;

    “JUST PASSING BY,” a short doc made up of impromptu interviews in New York City;

    “THE OP SHOP,” an Australian comedy set in a charity store;

    “THE ROAD TO TEL-AVIV,” a tense Israeli film, winner of the Best Student Short at the New York Short Film Festival;

    “BIRD FOOD,” animated Irish short about a man who has trouble with some pesky, hungry birds in a park;

    “NOT ANYMORE,” the story of the Syrian revolution as told through the experiences of two young Syrians, a male rebel fighter and a female journalist, as they fight an oppressive regime for the freedom of their people.

    “EVERY TUESDAY,” A US film about four New Yorker cartoonists;

    “BORN YESTERDAY,” US film centers on a life lived in a single day;

    “SLEIGHT OF HAND,” fanciful Australian stop-motion film about illusions.
