Filmmaker Ava DuVernay will serve as Guest Artistic Director at AFI Fest 2022 and has selected three independent films amplifying the voices and vision of women directors to showcase: Hellion (2014), directed by Kat Candler and starring Juliette Lewis and Aaron Paul; Mosquita y Mari (2012), directed by Aurora Guerrero; and Yelling to the Sky (2011), directed by Victoria Mahoney and starring Gabourey Sidibe and Zoë Kravitz. In addition to the screenings, Ava DuVernay will moderate a special panel with the directors, who are part of the historic all-women directorial roster for the acclaimed drama series Queen Sugar.

The Colombian film The Kings of the World (Los reyes del mundo) by Laura Mora has won the Golden Shell at San Sebastian Festival’s 70th edition. The film follows five Medellín teenagers from the streets on a desperate journey of survival. Genki Kawamura took the Silver Shell for Best Director for A Hundred Flowers (Hyakka), while the Best Screenplay Award went to Dong Yun Zhou and Wang Chao for their work on the Chao’s movie, A Woman (Kong Xiu); and City of Donostia / Sebastian Audience Award went to Argentina, 1985 by Santiago Mitre.
