  • SXSW Film Awards; FORT TILDEN, THE GREAT INVISIBLE Win Top Awards

    Envelope please! The Jury Awards were announced last night for SXSW Film 2014, and FORT TILDEN, debut feature film of directors Sarah-Violet Bliss and Charles Rogers, won the top award for Best Narrative Film, and THE GREAT INVISIBLE directed by Margaret Brown won the award for Best Documentary.  

    FORT TILDEN explores quarter life crisis, as two friends, Allie struggles to prepare for the Peace Corps, while Harper awaits checks from her father to fund her artistic dreams. But the two friends quickly shun responsibilities for the day when a pair of good-looking guys invites them along for a carefree Fort Tilden afternoon. As the two young women board their bikes and embark on a lengthy journey to the beach, they quickly realize that, akin to their confusing, transitioning lives, they neither know where they’re going nor how they plan to get there.  On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico. It killed 11 workers and caused the worst oil spill in American history. THE GREAT INVISIBLE goes beyond the media coverage to examine the crisis in depth.

  • 2014 Tribeca Film Festival Announces Short Film Lineup Featuring Sophia Loren, Danny DeVito, Fred Armisen

     Academy Award®-winning Live Action Short, HELIUMAcademy Award®-winning Live Action Short, HELIUM

    The 2014 Tribeca Film Festival (TFF), today announced its lineup of 58 short films, 29 of which are world premieres. The shorts will be presented in 9 thematic programs —5 narrative, 3 documentary, and 1 experimental. Last year’s popular genre-specific program returns this year as “Totally Twisted” with some added unusual comedies. 

    The Festival will screen the recent 2014 Academy Award®-winning Live Action Short, HELIUM. Edoardo Ponti, the 2013 winner of Tribeca’s Best Narrative Short film, THE NIGHTSHIFT BELONGS TO THE STARS, returns to Tribeca to world premiere HUMAN VOICE, featuring a powerful performance by Sophia Loren and cinematography by Academy Award®-winner, Rodrigo Prieto. Ponti is among a number of returning filmmakers including Steve James, Bill Morrison, Anita Thacher, and Ondi Timonor. The lineup also features performances by Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones), Danny DeVito (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), Jon Huertas (Castle), Seamus Dever (Castle), and voiceovers by Sigourney Weaver, Steve Buscemi, and Fred Armisen.

    Recipients of the Tribeca Film Festival’s Best Narrative Short and Best Documentary Short Awards will qualify for consideration in the Short Films category of the Annual Academy Awards® provided the film complies with the Academy rules.

    AFTER WORDS – documentary program

    These short documentaries are at times political, occasionally provocative, and always personal, reflecting the past and illuminating the present. Once a year, Duke Phillips and his crew of Colorado ranchers rounds up 2,000 wild buffalo as part of a unique conservation effort to preserve this endangered animal and the rich landscape it inhabits in Duke and the Buffalo. In a small Scottish town in 1974, factory workers refuse to carry out repairs on warplane engines as an act of solidarity against the violent military coup in Chile in Nae Pasaran. When young filmmaker Alexandra embeds surveillance cameras in her kitchen to capture a decade long affliction of unconscious nighttime eating episodes, her image of self is turned inside-out in Nocturnity. In The Next Part, a double-amputee Army Bomb Tech and his wife grapple with his injuries amidst unexpected events. In a small American town in the state of Georgia, a good citizen is an armed citizen In Guns We Trust. Four decades after one of the world’s most notorious crimes, a Manson Family member breaks her silence to reveal how a series of choices led to ultimate destruction in Life After Manson.

    Time waits for no one in these short documentaries. From serious to “show biz”; they run the gamut of emotion. An elderly man struggling to cope with his wife’s dementia becomes captivated by a young actress at Dracula’s, the theater restaurant in Ghost Train. Greg O’Brien, long-time Cape Cod reporter and newspaperman, who is diagnosed with Early-onset Alzheimer’s, decides to confront the disease and his imminent decline by writing candidly about the journey in A Place Called Pluto. When their football dreams are dashed, three athletes use their muscle and charm to become TV stars on American Gladiators, one of the oddest, most injury-riddled ‘sports’ shows ever concocted in True Gladiators. Traveling on the road with one of the most controversial musicians today, AMANDA  F***ING PALMER ON THE ROCKS explores her fractious relationship with the music industry in the aftermath of her record-breaking crowd funding campaign and her intense online and physical interactions with her fans. Three pink tutus, three pink helmets and three pink skateboards—meet Bella, Sierra, and Rella, as the young girls prove skateboarding is not just for boys inThe Pink Helmet Posse. Meet seven Hollywood golden era veterans with a combined age of 662—from a Vaudeville comedian still working at age 100 to the stunning siren that dated Ronald Reagan when he was a Democrat—these, ladies and gentlemen, are Showfolk.

    This year our New York Shorts program “gets real” with four world premiere documentaries relatable to anyone who calls this city home. My Depression: The Up and Down and Up of It is an animated adaptation of the award winning Book, “My Depression, A Picture Book” with the voices of Sigourney Weaver, Steve Buscemi, and Fred Armisen. 70 Hester Street is about the former synagogue/whiskey still/raincoat factory the filmmaker grew up in on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and how he wants to remember it. Told almost entirely through voice mail messages, One Year Lease documents the travails of Brian, Thomas and Casper as they endure a year-long apartment lease with Rita, the cat-loving landlady. Set against the backdrop of the Arab-Israeli conflict and tensions between Jewish and Muslim college students, Of Many tells the story of the relationship between an Orthodox Rabbi and Imam.

    As the commercial movie industry is rapidly shifting on a global basis to digital distribution and exhibition, moving image artists continue to celebrate the material qualities of the film medium, whose physical characteristics consist of reels of celluloid film, sprocket holes, optical sound tracks, mechanical splices, and the film emulsion, onto which they record images and sounds. At the same time, these artists continue to raise poignant critiques about the immateriality of the digital projection formats.

    Things don’t always go as planned for the characters in this group of narrative short films. Often thwarted but always resilient, these characters reflect dreams, desires, and the need to escape. In The Boy Scout, a couple trapped in their car for days after an unexpected snowstorm strands them on a remote mountain road confronts a life-or-death choice—with another storm approaching – should they stay together, or go their separate ways? A talented prison chef is paroled to a world that does not want him in Pour Retourner. La Carnada follows 13 year old Manny from Tijuana as he embarks on his first drug smuggle across the “Devil’s Highway,” a notoriously fatal stretch of desert on the Arizona/Mexico border. The Kiosk has been Olga’s little home for years, but her sweet tooth and monotonous life has made her larger than the exit, so to distract herself, she reads travel magazines and dreams of faraway places. InSweepstakes, when her husband suffers a neurological complication, a new mother is left to face the life she could have had. Sker is the true story of a kayaker, sailing through the fjords of Iceland, who stumbles across a skerry, but soon realizes perhaps porting there wasn’t such a good idea. Young Alfred is dying, but through the stories about a magical fantasy world told by the hospital’s eccentric janitor, Enzo, he regains the joy and happiness of his life and finds a safe haven in Helium.

    The delicate situations in these short films require steady hands and minds; the smallest slip can have serious repercussions. Connections and consequences are the key. Eoin works the night shift in a quiet petrol station and his main source of distraction, night after night, is regular customer, Ger, who believes he has a system for picking the winning card in Scratch. In App, a shy engineer desperately needs venture capital for his virtual wing-woman app, but can he and his app seduce a heartbroken girl at a swanky L.A. bar to prove it works? Contrapelo is the story of a proud Mexican barber who is forced to shave the leader of a drug cartel. Set on Election Day 2008 against the sweeping landscape of rural America, For Spacious Sky is the story of three lost brothers finding their way back to each other—one from incarceration, one from addiction, and one from discrimination. Heather is a shy lady who works at a helpline call center and when she receives a phone call from a mysterious man, she has no idea the encounter will change her life forever in The Phone Call.

    Decisions confront the characters in these narrative shorts. This plethora of predicaments deals with work, family, and friends, though not necessarily in that order. Love in the Time of March Madness tells the animated and awkward true-life misadventure of being 6’4” tall since 8th grade, becoming a basketball star, and dating shorter men. Free-spirited 21-year old Sheri has her own apartment, an older boyfriend, and works in a bar to make her living, but a surprise phone call brings her face to face with her past in Firstborn. As the class prepares for First Communion, one young girl refuses to do so, proclaiming that she’s an “atheist,” in Ruby. Today’s The Day is about an intern at one of the top dance agencies in town whose dream in life is to become a professional dancer, but he lacks the courage and confidence to fight for it…until today. Trapped in professional purgatory, four junior bankers must decide what they truly want before it’s too late in Parachute. A housewarming party spirals out of control when the host couple is sucked into a bout of light-hearted arm wrestling in Stew & Punch. A father in mourning struggles to connect with his blind daughter and learns that the colors of grief and understanding are more vivid when glimpsed through the eyes of the blind in Record.

    Life isn’t always easy, and this is exemplified by the shorts with both small and large conundrums; human interaction is life preservers in these turbulent waters. A man drags his girlfriend to the hospital for an abortion, but while sitting in a waiting room, he meets a girl who just might change his mind in Kakara. New York is silent after the loss of its Twin Towers; as loved ones are missing and people turn to prayer, one New Yorker struggles for answers inDay Ten. A woman seeks the comfort of her estranged mother tucked away in the mountainous wine country of Chile following a traumatic miscarriage in Tinto. Two bank robbers run into problems when each takes exception to the other’s mask in Sequestered. A man sets his alarm clock and goes to bed, but during the night, the world keeps turning in the animated, Cycloid. After her father’s death, awkward 11-year-old Nesma is at odds with the world around her since she began caring for her father’s pigeons, but now she faces an even bigger challenge in Nesma’s Birds. Set against the backdrop of 1950 Naples, Italy, Human Voice tells the story of Angela, a woman in the twilight of her years, as she rides an emotional roller coaster in her last telephone conversation with the man she loves.

  • TOTALLY TWISTED – narrative program

    Fun. Creepy. Weird. That pretty much sums up the feel of this program designed especially for our late-night loving audience. This program is a real killer, literally. The 30 Year Old Bris is about an interfaith couple where the girlfriend demands her boyfriend complete his conversion to Judaism by getting a circumcision before they wed. Trust Me, I’m A Lifeguard is a bro-mantic comedy about two lifeguards who, when confronted with the end of summer, are forced to make adult decisions such as: What’s the meaning of life, what makes a good Speedo and are those clams safe to eat? Unable to deal with the pressures of an examined life, Todd and Tamara confront the Peepers who are watching them, and expose what they’ve been hiding all along—themselves. In Remora, on the day of his wedding, Kevin confronts his brother, Landon, to ask for permission to marry his ex-wife, but learns the circumstances surrounding the estrangement were far more fantastic than he had been led to believe. A professional killer discovers he can get away with anything on Halloween night, including dragging his latest victim around as a prop amidst a sea of oblivious London partiers in The Body. In One Please, a young girl’s Mommy and Daddy love her…very, very much. A man wakes up one morning to realize the entire world has dreamed about him the night before in Sequence.

  • Child Trafficking Film, SOLD, starring Gillian Anderson, David Arquette To Open Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles | VIDEO Trailer

    The Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA) announced the Opening Night Gala film, SOLD, a harrowing and inspiring story of child trafficking directed by Jeffrey D. Brown, executive produced by Emma Thompson, and starring Gillian Anderson, David Arquette, and Seema Biswas.

    The full line-up of screenings and events will be announced in mid-March. The festival is widely recognized as the premiere showcase of groundbreaking Indian cinema. Celebrating its 12th year, IFFLA will run April 8 to 13 at ArcLight Hollywood in Los Angeles, the festival’s home since its inception.

    Through one extraordinary girl’s journey, SOLD illustrates the brutality of child trafficking, a crime experienced by millions of girls every year around the globe. SOLD is a clarion call to action and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.

    “Because of SOLD’s marvelous script and courageous and brilliant cast,” said Emma Thompson, “it is a story that we can ALL watch – so that we may understand the processes of slavery in modern India and feel able to act without feeling the kind of rage and hopelessness that gets in the way of doing anything.”

    SOLD is an adaptation of the National Book Award-nominated novel by Patricia McCormick, based on true accounts. The book has been translated into 32 languages and is a powerful entry point to introduce young people to the issue of modern day slavery.

    Director Jeffery D. Brown and select A-list cast and supporters will be in attendance at the Opening Night Gala.

    Nirvana-Bombay Palace will host the Opening Night Gala Reception in Beverly Hills. This year’s exclusive after-party will align with Nirvana’s sophisticated and positively vibrant atmosphere in an intimate setting that features masterful culinary renditions of Indian cuisine.

    In addition, the appointment of Jasmine Jaisinghani as the festival’s first-ever Artistic Director was announced today by Christina Marouda, IFFLA’s Founder and Chair of the Board.

    “We’re thrilled to have Jasmine on board as our Artistic Director,” said Marouda. “She was our first Festival Coordinator in 2005, and has been associated with IFFLA since. This feels like a full circle, and we could not think of a more deserving person to take on this position.”

    Jasmine Jaisinghani comes to IFFLA from AFI FEST where she served as the Cultural and Industry Relations Director and headed Guest Services. An independent producer of Indian-Mexican descent, Jasmine has also worked extensively in the music industry, including a tenure at George Harrison’s record label Dark Horse.

    Rounding out this year’s programming team are Director of Programming Mike Dougherty, Documentary Film Programmer Sudeep Sharma, and Short Film Programmer Thouly Dosios.

    Good news for RiverRun Film Festival.  The festival announced that it has been accepted as a qualifying festival for the Oscars® in the Documentary Short Subject award category. Beginning with this year’s Festival, recipients of RiverRun’s Jury Award for Best Documentary Short will qualify for consideration in the Documentary Short Subject category of the annual Academy Awards®.  The Festival also announced it’s two opening night fllms and closing night film for the 2014 festival.  The first opening night film, LE CHEF, is an uproarious comedy in which a famous veteran chef faces off against his restaurant’s new CEO.     This weekend, the 8th Byron Bay International Film Festival in Byron Bay, Australia, came to a close, and announced the awarding winning films and filmmakers. Opening Night’s film, WHEN MY SORROW DIED: THE LEGEND OF ARMEN RA & THE THEREMIN, took two of the most coveted awards, Best Film and Best Documentary. It’s subject, master theremin player Armen Ra, attending from Los Angeles said, “I was honestly really surprised and grateful and humbled to win these awards. This town has shown us so much love that it’s going to be very hard to leave; however, I will return!”

    On Saturday evening the festival officially wrapped with the Closing Red Carpet Gala Event for the world premiere of award-winning director, Cathy Henkel’s film, RISE OF THE ECO WARRIORS. The film is about an international group of young people chosen to take a 100-day challenge to save rain forests and orangutans in a region of Borneo devastated by palm oil production. It received a standing ovation.

    The festival also screened the world premiere of BURRA JURRA, attended by surfers Layne Beachley, Kirk Pengilly, Dave Rastovich, surf legend Brad Farmer.  BURRA JURRA is a documentary about a local surf charity changing the lives of local indigenous kids attended by of which Beachley is a patron and supporter.

HYDE will screen at the American Documentary Film Festival in Palm Springs, California,  on March 28, 2014.  This cinematic adventure explores the compelling life of a modern day renaissance man and true hero to the earth. Hyde is an old style cowboy and steadfast conservationist who dedicated his life to protecting the wild horses, land, and water of the American West.  RUNNING WILD is a captivating story of determination and accomplishment, featuring wild mustangs running free on Hyde’s breathtaking 13,000-acre Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary in South Dakota, and scenes shot at his beautiful Yamsi Ranch in Oregon and boyhood lake house in Michigan. RUNNING WILD is directed by Emmy Award winner Suzanne Mitchell and is executive produced by two-time Academy Award winner Barbara Kopple. The film garnered awards for best documentary at several festivals where it received standing ovations, as audiences were awed and inspired by Hyde’s passion.

At age 13, Hyde headed West and began a life journey to defend a fragile and changing natural world, a path that ultimately led him to South Dakota. Here, he successfully created one of the largest wild horse sanctuaries, giving freedom to thousands of mustangs rescued from the controversial BLM wild horse roundups and simultaneously saved an historic tract of land. Hyde’s storied past experience includes cowboy, WWII veteran, rodeo clown, champion to sandhill cranes, wolves and coyotes, Life Magazine photographer, award-winning author, and environmental educator and activist. RUNNING WILD shares rare footage of a Lakota Naming Ceremony, honoring Hyde as protector of sacred land. Hyde continues his efforts to preserve the environment in his fight against a proposed uranium mining project located near famed Mount Rushmore that has the potential to contaminate the ecosystem and deplete the aquifer that supports all life in the Black Hills, a gamble Hyde and his fellow opponents are not willing to take.   • FORGET ME NOT; An Intimate Chronicle of the Filmmaker’s Mother, and Her Battle With Alzheimer’s to Screen at 2014 American Documentary Film Festival

    When David Sieveking left home to study filmmaking, he left behind parents who were active, intelligent and involved. Several years later, on a visit home for Christmas, he noticed that his once spirited mother, Gretal, had become somewhat hesitant, and overly forgetful. Shortly after that came the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease – a particularly aggressive case that, over the next four years left Gretal unable to remember many things, unable to care for herself, and unable to be left alone. 

    FORGET ME NOT is Sieveking’s chronicle of his mother’s decline, and the impact of that decline on his father and himself. Director Sieveking’s attempts to help his mother remember things brings his parents’ larger history into focus; their lives in the heady days of 60s radicalism – their open marriage, the activism in which they were both involved, and the resultant investigation of them by the Swiss Secret Service.

    FORGET ME NOT is a beautiful, yet emotional film. It will make audiences cry, but not because of the tragedy of Gretal’s struggle with Alzheimer’s. Rather, because of its tribute to the great person that she was, and the pride with which her son, the filmmaker, views her. FORGET ME NOT is a tribute to Gretal, and to every child who believes his or her mother is the greatest person in the world. This film is part of the 2014 German Film Series.

    The Cinéfondation and Short Films Jury of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival will be presided over by Abbas Kiarostami (Iran), and includes directors Noémie Lvovsky (France), Daniela Thomas (Brazil),  Mahamat-Saleh Haroun (Chad), and Joachim Trier (Norway). They will be tasked with awarding three prizes to films submitted by students from film schools the world over, which will be presented in the Cinéfondation Selection. 

    Abbas Kiarostami, the Iranian director and screenwriter, is one of the greatest directors of contemporary cinema. After rising to international fame with Où est la maison de mon ami ? (1987), Abbas KIAROSTAMI has since presented a number of his films at the Festival de Cannes, including five in Competition: Through the Olive Trees (1994), Taste of Cherry (Palme d’or 1997),  Ten (2002),  Certified Copy (2010) and Like Someone in Love (2012). He is also known for his photography work. He has been interested in the Cinéfondation since its creation in 1998, when he agreed to be a patron of the project alongside Martin SCORSESE.

    Noémie Lvovsky, the French director, screenwriter and actress, directed Oublie-moi in 1994, her first feature film, imbued with off-beat humour. She then directed Petites (1997), La Vie ne me fait pas peur (1999), Les Sentiments (2003) and wrote the screenplays for several films by Valeria BRUNI TEDESCHI, Arnaud DESPLECHIN and Philippe GARREL. In 2012, she directed Camille redouble, which was selected for the Directors’ Fortnight and garnered 13 nominations for the César. It met with resounding public and critical acclaim.

    Daniela Thomas, the Brazilian director and visual artist, is famed throughout the theatre world for her scenography. In the cinema, she has worked in partnership with Walter SALLES on Terra Estrangeira (1997) and O Primeiro Dia (1998) and the pair also directed Linha de Passe, presented in Competition at the Festival de Cannes in 2008.

    Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, the Chadian director, took refuge in France, where he studies film and works as a journalist. His first film, Bye Bye Africa, reaped a prize in Venice while Abouna was selected for the Directors’ Fortnight in 2002. He rose to prominence as a director with Daratt, which garnered an award in Venice in 2006.A Screaming Man was presented in Competition at the Festival de Cannes in 2010, where it picked up the Jury Prize. In 2013, he was once again In Competition with Grigris.

    Joachim Trier is a young Norwegian director. After his first critically acclaimed film, Reprise (2006), he wrote and directed Oslo, 31 August, a subtle exploration of the problems faced by his generation. Selected for Un Certain Regard in 2011, his talents became known to a much wider audience.

    The 57th San Francisco International Film Festival taking place April 24 to May 8, 2014, announced the films in competition for the New Directors Prize and the Golden Gate Award (GGA) contenders in the documentary feature category. SFIFF will award nearly $40,000 in total cash prizes this year. The New Directors Prize of $10,000 will be given to a narrative first feature that exhibits a unique artistic sensibility and deserves to be seen by as wide an audience as possible. The GGA documentary feature winner will receive $10,000 and the GGA Bay Area documentary feature winner will receive $5,000. A total of 25 countries are represented in this year’s competing feature films. Independent juries will select the winners, which will be announced at the Golden Gate Awards, Wednesday, May 7.

    Set in Guadalajara, The Amazing Catfish follows the quiet transformation of a solitary young woman informally adopted and absorbed into a rambunctious matriarchy in a state of crisis. Filmed by Claire Denis’ long-time cinematographer, Agnès Godard, Claudia Sainte-Luce’s debut feature, based loosely on events from her own life, blends a wry and moving naturalism with moments of inspired comedy. 

    The Blue Wave, Zeynep Dadak and Merve Kayan, Turkey/Germany/Netherlands/ Greece
    In this low-key, loosely plotted coming-of-age tale, a Turkish teenage girl wrestles with mood swings, unfocused restlessness, familial responsibilities, shifting friendships and romantic complications during a year of quiet tumult. 

    Difret, Zeresenay Berhane Mehari, Ethiopia
    In a contemporary Ethiopian village, a 14-year-old girl is abducted from school in an attempt at forced marriage, a tradition in her community. Her efforts to free herself from a preordained future set off a legal firestorm in this powerful drama inspired by a true story that pits the law against an entrenched cultural mindset.

    The Dune, Yossi Aviram, France/Israel
    Delving into issues of identity and aging, this nuanced relationship drama portrays the personal crises faced by an aging gay cop in France and a younger Israeli man who is found on the beach, mute and without any identification. 

    History of Fear, Benjamín Naishtat, Argentina/France/Germany/ Uruguay/Qatar
    Paranoia runs rampant in this accomplished first feature, instilling a disorienting sense of dread in the viewer. Are the strange occurrences in an affluent Buenos Aires suburb evidence that the skittish residents are actually being targeted? Naishtat foregoes ready explanations or assurances in favor of foreboding suggestions in a film that is sprawling both in scope and implications but astonishingly exacting in its execution.

    Manos Sucias, Josef Wladyka, USA/Colombia
    A reluctant smuggler and his eager neophyte brother shepherd a dangerous narco-torpedo up the coast of Colombia, posing as fishermen. Paramilitary, guerrillas and hardscrabble desperation suffuse every inch of the jungle and waters that surround them, eager to separate the siblings from their only opportunity to escape the circumstances of their lives.

    Of Horses and Men, Benedikt Erlingsson, Iceland/Germany
    The relationship between man and beast is explored in a series of dryly humorous, linked episodes set in a small Icelandic hamlet. With its idiosyncratic portrait of village life, this remarkable debut features several unforgettable visual tableaux.

    Salvation Army, Abdellah Taïa, Morocco
    Adapting his autobiographical novel, director Abdellah Taïa tells the story of a gay Moroccan boy finding self-realization and personal strength within a society that shuns him. Shot by the brilliant Agnès Godard, the film takes the form of a diptych, telling the protagonist’s story in two different time periods and locales.

    South Is Nothing, Fabio Mollo, Italy/France
    Miriam Karlkvist took a well-deserved Shooting Star award at the Berlinale for her portrayal of an androgynous teenage girl negotiating life in a mafia-controlled town whose code of silence is destroying her family. Filmed in Reggio Calabria, this debut feature combines poetic realism with hard-edged cynicism.

    Trap Street, Vivian Qu, China
    What’s it like to be a 21st-century young adult-with access to gadgets, the Internet and other high-tech conveniences — within China’s surveillance state? First-time writer-director Vivian Qu’s taut, slow-building noir cleverly uses a simple boy-meets-girl tale to unearth a hidden world of government control lurking just under the surface.

    White Shadow, Noaz Deshe, Italy/Germany/Tanzania
    Inspired by news reports of the ongoing perils faced by albinos in Tanzania, Noaz Deshe’s film depicts a fractured and uneasy world, where superstition and the rule of law collide. An albino youth named Alias must learn to navigate through a culture not just unsympathetic to his condition, but actively violent towards it.

    In addition to these 11 first features in competition, the New Directors section of SFIFF57 includes 14 out-of-competition films, which will be announced on Tuesday, April 1.

    2014 GOLDEN GATE AWARDS DOCUMENTARY FEATURE COMPETITION

    Coast of Death, Lois Patiño, Spain
    From the first entrancing images of trees being cut down in a fog-filled forest to the later blues of the sky and ocean fusing to erase the horizon, the always static frames of this documentary offer a meditative and prismatic view of Spain’s much storied and dangerous “Coast of Death.”

    The Last Season, Sara Dosa, USA
    Every September, over 200 seasonal workers, many of them Cambodian, Lao, Hmong, Mien and Thai, descend upon the tiny town of Chemult, Oregon, to search the woods for the rare Matsuke, a fungus highly prized in Japan. This documentary examines the bond between two of these hunters, an elderly Vietnam vet and a survivor of the Khmer Rouge, during one unusually hard season.

    The Overnighters, Jesse Moss, USA
    Unemployed men and women across America want new oil jobs in North Dakota, but housing is at a premium. Enter Pastor Jay Reinke. Despite protests from his own congregation, he opens up his church to “overnighters” — people in search of a second shot at the American Dream. The film expertly and compassionately depicts the conflict between locals, these new residents and Pastor Reinke’s controversial policy.

    Return to Homs, Talal Derki, Syria/Germany
    Winner of the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at Sundance, this dispatch from the besieged Syrian city of Homs is both an elegy and a call to action. Filmed between 2011 and 2013, it presents a visceral eyewitness account of the conflict as a peaceful uprising descends into civil war and idealistic young men are transformed into revolutionary martyrs. 

    Soul Food Stories, Tonislav Hristov, Bulgaria/Finland
    Muslim, Christian, Roma and atheist Communists live together peacefully in Satovcha, a Bulgarian village. They have differing theologies and politics, but are united by a love of food and the eternal mystery of being men and women. Beautifully shot, the film unfolds like a 10-course meal, with observations of food preparation and religious diversity laced into the recipes.

    Stop the Pounding Heart, Roberto Minervini, USA/Italy/Belgium
    This unique hybrid of documentary and narrative offers an evocative portrait of the quotidian lives of a devout young Christian goat farmer and the bullriding cowboy who lives nearby. As much a portrait of the East Texas town where they live as it is a relationship drama, the film combines ethnography and budding romance to compelling effect.

    Three Letters from China, Luc Schaedler, Switzerland
    Luc Schaedler’s latest work presents distinct and illuminating portraits of contemporary life in China. Attentively observing life on a parched farm, a grim industrial zone, a rural village and a booming megacity, the documentary expressively reveals the upheaval and uncertainty of a rapidly changing nation through the deeply engrossing stories of its people.

    We Come as Friends, Hubert Sauper, France/Austria
    South Sudan may have declared its independence but that hasn’t stopped multinationals and missionaries from laying claim to its natural resources and influencing its people’s religious beliefs. Employing intrepid techniques and striking visuals, documentarian Hubert Sauper (Darwin’s Nightmare) delivers another piercing examination of the human cost of neocolonialism that will provoke both thought and outrage.

    In addition to these eight features by emerging filmmakers in the documentary competitions, the Golden Gate Awards also will include competitors in six other categories. These films will be announced on Tuesday, April 1.
