Under the theme “Togetherness,” the 12th annual Richmond International Film Festival (RIFF) takes place September 26 – October 1, 2023, showcasing 195 award-winning film premieres from the U.S. and 20 countries – from Spain to Israel, Germany to Japan – plus 30 national and international bands, the first annual Global Visionary Summit Cinema & Panel Series, signature community events, and the red carpet at various venues across Richmond.

The fantastical epic animated feature film, The Boy and the Heron, from Academy Award–winning visionary director Hayao Miyazaki, will be the Opening Night Gala Presentation for the 48th Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday, September 7, at Roy Thomson Hall. The original story was written and directed by the Japanese filmmaker and produced by Oscar®-winning Studio Ghibli, which Miyazaki co-founded.

Eleven films – seven first works and four second films – from nineteen countries will compete for the Kutxabank-New Directors Award at the 71st San Sebastian Festival running from September 22 to 30, 2023.
