  • Philadelphia Film Festival’s Spring Showcase Unveils Lineup; Includes Retrospective Series Screening Oscar Winning Director Alfonso Cuarón’s Films

    The full film slate is unveiled for the upcoming PFF: Spring Showcase, a new spring extension of the Philadelphia Film Festival, which will be held Friday, April 11 to Thursday, April 17, 2014. In its opening weekend, the Showcase will feature 17 films currently screening through the international film festival circuit. The remainder of the event will feature evening screenings highlighting the creative and visually captivating films of 2014 Oscar Winner for Best Director, Alfonso Cuarón. The retrospective series will screen all of Cuarón’s features in chronological order beginning with his first, 1991’s SÓLO CON TU PAREJA.

  • Philadelphia Film Festival to Present PFF Spring Showcase, April 11 to 17

    The Philadelphia Film Society will produce the Philadelphia Film Festival (PFF): Spring Showcase, a 7-day film event scheduled to take place from Friday, April 11 to Thursday, April 17, exclusively at the PFS Theater at the Roxy. According to the PFS, the Spring Showcase offers a preview of the kind of diverse programming that audiences can expect from the annual Philadelphia Film Festival, October 16 – 26, 2014.  A small collection of exciting new films including summer releases and other hits from the festival circuit, it is a great sampler of the kinds of films that will be presented in the line-up this fall.

    “I’m thrilled to add this exciting new event to the PFS 2014 calendar, allowing us to spotlight some of our favorite upcoming films from the Spring and Summer while also showcasing the newly renovated PFS Theater at the Roxy,” said Andrew Greenblatt, Executive Director.  “With the event scheduled to take place principally at the PFS Theater at the Roxy, I certainly recommend getting tickets early, as I hope and expect a full sell-out.”

    “We’re extremely thrilled with this exciting selection of films. We hope to have built a fun weekend as a great mid-year reminder of the big cinematic things to come, ” said Michael Lerman, Artistic Director and head of the PFS programming team.

  • “ILO ILO” “GOD LOVES UGANDA” Leads 2013 Philadelphia Film Festival Jury Award Winners

    The 22nd Philadelphia Film Festival announced the 2013 Jury Award winners; ILO ILO won the award for Best Narrative Feature Film, and GOD LOVES UGANDA won the award for Best Documentary Feature Film. Set in the late 1990s, the moving relationship between a rebellious Singaporean boy and his new Filipino nanny is lovingly captured in director Anthony Chen’s ILO ILO, winner of the Camera d’Or for Best First Feature at 2013 Cannes. In GOD LOVES UGANDA, the effects of the American evangelical fundamentalist movement on the religious and political climate of Uganda are scrutinized in this eye-opening documentary by Academy Award-winning director Roger Ross Williams. 

    LET THE FIRE BURN directed by Jason Osder  which examines the fatal standoff between Philadelphia law enforcement and the black militant liberation group MOVE,  won the Pinkenson Award for Best Local Feature. The Archie Award for Best First Feature went to HARMONY LESSONS directed by Emir Baigazin, about the squabbles of schoolboys in a village in the steppes of rural Kazakhstan, which then take a dark tragic turn.

  • Philadelphia Film Festival Adds 12 YEARS A SLAVE and OMAR to 2013 Lineup

    The 22nd Philadelphia Film Festival which runs from Thursday, October 17 – Sunday, October 27, has added a Centerpiece Screening of 12 YEARS A SLAVE on Saturday, October 19th.   The follow-up from director Steve McQueen to 2011’s Shame, 12 YEARS A SLAVE tells the incredible true story of one man’s fight for survival and freedom after being abducted and sold into slavery.  

    The screening of Nebraska, previously scheduled for Saturday, October 19th will now take place instead on Monday, October 21st.

    OMAROMAR

    The Festival also added OMAR, the Best Foreign Film nominee from the Palestinian Territory for the Academy Awards.   The new film from Oscar-nominated director Hany Abu-Assad (Paradise Now), OMAR is described as an intense and romantic thriller about a Palestinian teenager whose life is thrown into disarray when he is arrested for the alleged shooting of an Israeli soldier and asked to turn on those closest to him.  Omar replaces Documented, which will no longer be included in the Festival due to technical issues.

  • Local Philly Films in Greater Filmadelphia Lineup at 22nd Philadelphia Film Festival

    Six films highlighting the Philadelphia-area and local filmmakers, including the U.S. Premieres of both 1982 and MCCANICK starring Cory Monteith in his filnal role, will screen in the Greater Filmadelphia category at the upcoming 22nd Philadelphia Film Festival, which runs Thursday, October 17 to Sunday, October 27, 2013.  The category also includes the Philadelphia premiere of LET THE FIRE BURN, as well as the Philadelphia premieres of THE DISCOVERERS, THE SUSPECT and TOWN HALL.  

     All films in the Greater Filmadelphia category are eligible for the Sharon Pinkenson Award for Best Local Feature. 

    Greater Filmadelphia line-up includes:

    1982 – A mother’s drug addiction threatens to tear a family apart in this searing Philadelphia-based drama during the early days of the crack cocaine epidemic.  

    THE DISCOVERERS – Taking place primarily in the original setting of the Lewis and Clark expedition, The Discoverers is, at its heart, a family-reconciliation tale in which three generations of estranged relatives put aside their differences and past history to reconnect as a family and cope with loss. 

    MCCANICK – Gritty and suspenseful, McCanick is a tense action-drama about a volatile Philadelphia police officer determined to apprehend a recent parolee, who holds information about the cop’s past.  

    THE SUSPECT – An armed robbery, the appearance of an African-American man in an all-white Southern town and racial politics collide in The Suspect, an engaging thriller full of plot twists and surprises. 

    TOWN HALL – Documentarians Sierra Pettengill and Jamila Wignot provide an unadulterated, impartial look at the political and personal lives of two passionate Tea Party members.

    The full film line-up was unveiled for the 22nd Philadelphia Film Festival, taking place from October 17 to October 27 throughout the Greater Philadelphia area. As earlier announced, the Festival will open on October 17th with J.C. Chandor’s, ALL IS LOST, starring Robert Redford, at the Perelman Theater. Jason Reitman’s LABOR DAY, will close the Festival on Friday, October 25th at the newly renovated Prince Music Theater.

    The Festival will also include 5 centerpiece screenings, including AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY, MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM, NEBRASKA, PHILOMENA, and THE UNKNOWN KNOWN.

  • ALL IS LOST Starring Robert Redford is Opening Night Film for Philadelphia Film Festival | TRAILER

     All is Lost

    ALL IS LOST by writer/director J. C. Chandor is the Opening Night film of the 22nd Philadelphia Film Festival (PFF), premiering in the new state-of-the-art Perelman Theater at the Kimmel Center on Thursday, October 17 . The film is described as “a gripping tale of solitude and survival in the face of disaster” and featuring a “tour-de-force solo performance from Robert Redford.” In ALL IS LOST Robert Redford plays a lone sailor who finds his yacht sinking after a collision with a discarded shipping container in the middle of the Indian Ocean. 

    Also at the festival, Bruce Dern will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award and Kerry Bishé with the Rising Star Award. The Philadelphia Film Festival will run from Thursday, October 17 through Sunday, October 27
