Founded in 1957, the San Francisco International Film Festival is the longest-running film festival in the Americas. Held each spring for two weeks and highly anticipated by its loyal, passionate audiences, SFIFF is an extraordinary showcase of cinematic discovery and innovation in one of the country’s most beautiful cities, featuring some 150 films and live events with more than 100 filmmakers in attendance and nearly two dozen awards presented for excellence in film craft.

Emmy award-winning filmmaker Peter Nicks’ Stephen Curry: Underrated will open the 66th San Francisco International Film Festival (SFFILM Festival) on Thursday, April 13th. Returning to the Festival for the fourth time, Nicks’ latest film is an intimate documentary of the celebrated and iconic NBA superstar Stephen Curry.

SFFILM will honor Ryan Coogler, Sarah Polley, and Margot Robbie at their annual 2022 SFFILM Awards Night. The event honoring exemplary achievement in film craft and also a fundraiser with proceeds from the event supporting the organization’s mission, will take place on Monday, December 5, 2022.

SFFILM announced the winners of the juried Golden Gate Awards competition at the 65th San Francisco International Film Festival. The top awards went to the Iranian film Hit the Road by Panah Panahi for New Directors Award and Master of Light by Rosa Ruth Boesten won the Documentary Feature Award.

The 65th annual San Francisco International Film Festival will make its return to theaters in person, featuring more than 130 films from 56 countries, including 16 World and 10 North American premieres. The Festival will also celebrate cinematic icon Michelle Yeoh with a special tribute to be presented by critically acclaimed actor Sandra Oh. The 2022 Festival will run April 21–May 1.

Actor, author and comedian Jenny Slate will be celebrated during the 65th San Francisco International Film Festival with a special tribute. The Tribute to Jenny Slate will be held on Friday, April 22 at 7:30 pm at the Castro Theatre, followed by a screening of her highly anticipated film Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.

2021 San Francisco International Film Festival announced the winners of the juried Golden Gate Award (GGA) competitions and the Audience Awards with the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature going to Chase Palmer for the film Naked Singularity. The Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature was a tie between director Roberto Salinas for the film Cuban Dancer and director Jeremy Workman for Lily Topples the World.

Three new feature films have been added to the lineup of the 2021 San Francisco International Film Festival (April 9-18) along with free talks, a special tribute to Vanessa Kirby, a live drag show, and a unique screening accompanied by live performance from Grammy-winning musician Fantastic Negrito.

San Francisco International Film Festival unveiled the 103 films for the 2021 Festival set to take place online and in-person events, with digital screenings being hosted through the SFFILM website and live screenings and performances at the Fort Mason Flix drive-in theater. The 2021 Festival will run April 9–18.

Filmmakers Aaron Sorkin and Chloé Zhao will receive honors at SFFILM Awards Night, which this year has shifted from its traditional seated dinner and onstage presentation format to a dynamic live-streamed showcase, taking place December 9.

The coronavirus, (COVID-19) pandemic is having a devastating impact on film festivals with many postponing or cancelling outright. Major festivals such as San Francisco International Film Festival and RiverRun International Film Festival have canceled, while others such as Richmond International Film Festival and Florida Film Festival have been postponed until the Summer or Fall.
