Richard Hobert’s The Birdcatcher’s Son won the the top prize – Audience Choice Award at the 35th Santa Barbara International Film Festival which wrapped over the weekend. Fatos Berisha’s The Flying Circus won the Jeffrey C. Barbakow award for Best International Feature Film, and the Panavision Spirit Award for Independent Cinema went to William Nicholson’s Hope Gap.
The Santa Barbara International Film Festival announced the lineup of over 200 movies including 47 world premieres and 71 U.S. premieres, for its 35th edition, which will take place from January 15 to 25, 2020. Kicking off the festival is opening night film – the U.S. premiere of Shelly Love’s A Bump Along the Way, a female-led, feel-good comedy drama set in Derry, Northern Ireland, about a middle-aged woman whose unexpected pregnancy after a one-night stand acts as the catalyst for her to finally take control of her life.

For their critically acclaimed work in Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story, Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver will receive the Outstanding Performers of the Year Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Johansson and Driver will be honored at the Arlington Theatre in Santa Barbara, CA on Friday, January 17th.
Awkwafina (The Farewell), Taron Egerton (Rocketman), Florence Pugh (Midsommar), and Taylor Russell (Waves) will receive the Virtuosos Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, an honor created to recognize a select group of talent whose noteworthy performances in film have elevated them into the national cinematic dialogue. The tribute will take place on Saturday, January 18th at the historic Arlington Theatre during the 35th Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
Renée Zellweger will receive the American Riviera Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in January 2020. Zellweger will be recognized for her many attributes to the art of film over the years, and most recently, her work as Judy Garland in LD Entertainment and Roadside Attractions’ JUDY. Kasper Torsting’s In Love and War (I krig & kærlighed) was voted winner of the Audience Choice Award at the 2019 Santa Barbara International Film Festival. The film also won the Valhalla Award for Best Nordic Film. 1917: A Danish soldier fighting under the German regime fakes his own death to escape the horrors in the trenches and return to his wife and son-only to find that everything has changed.
The 34th Edition of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival taking place from January 30 to February 9, 2019, will feature 63 world premieres and 59 U.S. premieres from 48 countries, along with tributes with the year’s top talent, panel discussions, and free community education and outreach programs. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie (Leave No Trace), John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman) and Steven Yeun (Burning) to receive the 2019 Virtuosos Award at the upcoming 34th edition of the festival.

Glenn Close, most recently gracing the silver screen in Sony Pictures Classics’ The Wife. will receive the prestigious Maltin Modern Master Award at the 34th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

The Modern Master Award was established in 1995 and is the highest accolade presented by SBIFF. Created to honor an individual who has enriched our culture through accomplishments in the motion picture industry, it was re-named the Maltin Modern Master Award in 2015 in honor of long-time SBIFF moderator and renowned film critic Leonard Maltin. Past recipients include Denzel Washington, Michael Keaton, Bruce Dern, Ben Affleck, Christopher Plummer, Christopher Nolan, James Cameron, Clint Eastwood, Cate Blanchett, Will Smith, George Clooney and Peter Jackson.
