Continuing TIFF’s commitment to championing women filmmaker, Beans director Tracey Deer will receive the TIFF Emerging Talent Award at the 2020 TIFF Tribute Awards, during this year’s 45th Annual Toronto International Film Festival.

Academy Award–nominated and six-time Grammy Award–winning composer Terence Blanchard will be honored with the TIFF Variety Artisan Award at this year’s TIFF Tribute Awards during the 45th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival. The award recognizes a distinguished creative who has excelled at their craft and made an outstanding contribution to cinema and entertainment. Last year’s Variety Artisan Award was given to Academy Award–winning cinematographer Roger Deakins.

Academy Award–winning actor Sir Anthony Hopkins will receive a TIFF Tribute Actor Award; director Chloé Zhao will receive the TIFF Ebert Director Award; and Academy Award–nominated filmmaker Mira Nair will be honored with the Jeff Skoll Award in Impact Media at the TIFF Tribute Award Gala as part of the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival.

Searchlight Pictures unveiled a series of global screenings to commemorate Chloé Zhao’s upcoming feature film NOMADLAND’s invitations to Venice, Toronto, Telluride, and New York Film Festivals. Zhao’s third film, an exploration of modern-day van dwelling life on the road, will World Premiere with simultaneous screenings on September 11th at the 77th Venice International Film Festival and the 45th Toronto International Film Festival, both of which will feature virtual introductions by producer, writer, editor, and director Zhao, and producer and actor Frances McDormand. Telluride, which canceled its 47th edition due to the global pandemic, will host a special “Telluride from Los Angeles” drive-in screening in Southern California later in the evening, featuring in-person appearances by Zhao and McDormand. Additionally, the New York Film Festival announced NOMADLAND as the Centerpiece Selection of the 58th edition of the festival, leading into a domestic theatrical release this fall, subsequently rolling out internationally.

Spike Lee’s filmed adaptation of the Broadway-acclaimed David Byrne’s American Utopia is the Opening Night Presentation of the 45th Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday, September 10th.

Academy Award–winning actress Kate Winslet is the recipient of this year’s TIFF Tribute Actor Award, to be presented on Tuesday, September 15, during the 45th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival which will be offered in a virtual form in 2020.

The New York, Venice, Telluride, and Toronto International film festivals have joined together to commit to collaboration in a time of uncertainty. The joint statement reads:

Amidst the global coronavirus pandemic, the 45th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival, taking place September 10–19, is tailoring to fit the moment, with physical screenings and drive-ins, digital screenings, virtual red carpets, press conferences and industry talks. This year’s selection comprises a lineup of 50 new feature films, five programs of short films, as well as interactive talks, film cast reunions, and Q&As with cast and filmmakers.

Tribeca is partnering with YouTube to launch We Are One: A Global Film Festival, an unprecedented 10-day digital film festival exclusively on YouTube, to present festival programming for free to audiences around the world. Set to begin on May 29 on YouTube.com/WeAreOne, the festival will feature programming curated by the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival, Guadalajara International Film Festival, International Film Festival & Awards Macao (IFFAM), Jerusalem Film Festival, Mumbai Film Festival (MAMI), Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Locarno Film Festival, Marrakech International Film Festival, New York Film Festival, San Sebastian International Film Festival, Sarajevo Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, Sydney Film Festival, Tokyo International Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, and more.

TIFF revealed its Canada’s Top Ten list of features and short films of 2019. This year’s Top Ten list features three directorial debuts and four Indigenous filmmakers. The shorts and features lineups showcase works by 12 of Canada’s most talented female filmmakers. Four directors are alumni from TIFF’s Talent Development programs: Filmmaker Lab, Writers’ Studio, and Telefilm Canada’s PITCH THIS!

Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit starring Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johansson, Rebel Wilson, Thomasin McKenzie, and newcomer Roman Griffin Davis won the top prize – the Grolsch People’s Choice Award at the 42nd Toronto International Film Festival. In the comedic satire, a young German boy discovers a Jewish girl hiding in his home and consults with his imaginary best friend, Adolf Hitler.
