The European Film Academy announced the EFA Documentary Selection, a list of 12 European documentaries recommended for a nomination for this year’s European Film Awards. There are 12 European countries represented in this year’s EFA Documentary Selection.
Arturo Montenegro’s family drama Everybody Changes (Todos cambiamos), starring Gaby Gnazzo, Andrea Pérez Meana, Susan Elizabeth Castillo, Mónica Lola Díaz and José Manuel Arispe was selected by the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Panama to represent Panama at the 2020 Academy Awards in the Best International Feature category.
The film In the Life of Music co-directed by Caylee So and Sok Visal, that follows a family’s life over three generations affected by the reign of the Khmer Rouge, was selected by the Cambodia Oscar Selection Committee (COSC) to represent Cambodia in the International Feature Film category at the 92nd Academy Awards.
The Argentinian film, The Sleepwalkers (Los Sonámbulos), written and directed by Paula Hernández, and starring Érica Rivas (WILD TALES), Ornella D’Elia, Marilu Marini, Luis Ziembrowsky, Daniel Hendler (FAMILY LAW, QUEENS), Valeria Lois, Rafael Federman will World Premiere, at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival.
Homeward (Evge) directed by Nariman Aliev has been selected by Ukraine to represent the country in the 2020 Oscars in Best International Feature Film category. The film tells the story of a Crimean Tatar man, Mustafa (Akhtem Seitablaev), who is coming back to the Russia-annexed Crimea to bury his elder son (Remzi Bilyalov) who died in the Donbas war.
Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite (Gisaengchung), winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival was selected as South Korea’ entry in the Best International Feature category at the 92nd Academy Awards.
Elia Suleiman’s new comedy film, It Must Be Heaven, which won FIPRESCI prize of the international film critics for Best Film at the Cannes Film Festival has been selected by Palestine as the country’s submission in the Best International Feature category at the 92nd Academy Awards.

Truth and Justice (Tõde ja õigus), adapted and directed by Tanel Toom, has been selected by the Estonian Film Institute (EFI) as Estonia’s candidate for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. Additionally, for the first time, an Estonian documentary Ksenia Okhapkina’s Immortal is also eligible for an Oscar, after having won the Grand Prix for the Best Documentary at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
Five films from the five Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, have been selected as candidates at The Haugesund International Film Festival for the Nordic Council Film Prize 2019.
The European Film Academy announced the 46 films on this year’s EFA Feature Film Selection, the list of feature-length fiction films recommended for a nomination for the European Film Awards 2019. With 31 European countries represented, the list illustrates the great diversity in European cinema.
