  • Zoe Hopkins’ Family-Adventure Drama, ‘KAYAK TO KLEMTU’ Heads to Cannes Film Festival Marché du Film [Trailer]

Kayak to Klemtu Canadian Heiltsuk/Mohawk filmmaker Zoe Hopkins’ family adventure, ‘Kayak to Klemtu’ is a story about a grieving family who kayaks to the island of Klemtu, only to find that true adventure is with each other. Directed by Zoe Hopkins (‘Mohawk Midnight Runners’) and co-written by Hopkins and Michael Sparaga (‘Servitude’), ‘Kayak to Klemtu’ follows 14-year-old Ella (Ta’kaiya Blaney) on her journey to fulfill her Uncle David’s (Evan Adams) dying wish – to kayak to the remote island of Klemtu and to stand and testify to protect their ancestral land from an oil pipeline. To honor her Uncle’s memory and fulfill his dying wish, Ella makes it her mission to kayak from Tai’Amin to Klemtu, where she can lay her Uncle to rest at his home and stand in his place to defend their beloved homeland waters. Ella’s strong, youthful self is prepared for the hardships of kayaking down the currents of the Inside Passage and braving the wildlife of B.C.’s stunning Great Bear Rainforest that will surround her. But, Ella’s biggest challenge will be with who accompanies her on the adventure – her other grouchy Uncle Don (Lorne Cardinal), her compulsive and recently widowed Aunt Cory (Sonja Bennett), and her Uncle Dave’s clumsy stepson, Alex (Jared Ager-Foster). On the family’s kayak trip, they will have to learn to navigate the waters, while searching for ways to cope with the loss of their loved one. Can the family work together to survive the beautiful but dangerous trip and still make it on time to save their indigenous homeland waters? Kayak to Klemtu poster Produced by Sheryl Kotzer and Daniel Bekerman from Scythia Films, the leading Canadian service producer, ‘Kayak to Klemtu’ is about more than family, ethnic loyalties, and the loss of a loved one, but rather, a film deeply rooted in humanity, which spotlights the possible catastrophic effects that could occur on any part of our world’s coastlines and waterways. ‘Kayak to Klemtu’ had its world premiere on Oct. 20th at the 2017 TIFF Bell Lightbox. Since, the film has successfully competed in several film festivals, including Cine Las Americas, Powel River Film Festival, imagineNative Film + Media Arts Festival (2017), receiving the Audience Choice Award, and Victoria Film Festival Canada (2008), where the film departed with the Festival Prize for Best Canadian First Feature. TriCoast Worldwide CEOs, Strathford Hamilton and Marcy Levitas Hamilton will represent Hopkins’ ‘Kayak to Klemtu’ at this year’s Cannes Film Festival for worldwide rights, excluding Canada. ‘Kayak to Klemtu’ stars several Canadian-native and award winning actors, including Evan Adams (‘Lost in the Barrens’, ‘Smoke Signals’), Jared Ager Foster (‘Horns’, ‘The X-Files’, ‘Proof’), Sonja Bennett (‘The Fog’, ‘Fido’, ‘Preggoland’), Lorne Cardinal (‘Corner Gas’ ‘Insomnia’, FX’s (‘Fargo’) and Ta’kaiya Blaney (‘Savage’, ‘Shi-Shi-Etko’). https://vimeo.com/265839810

  • LANDING UP Starring Late E’dena Hines’ (Morgan Freeman’s granddaughter), Sets Release Date [Trailer]

[caption id="attachment_22611" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]Landing Up Landing Up[/caption] Landing Up, the award-nominated film from director Dani Tenenbaum, starring Ben Rappaport and featuring the last on-screen performance of Morgan Freeman’s late granddaughter, E’dena Hines, is headed for release on DVD, digital and video-on-demand (VOD), on May 15, 2018.  The dramatic and edgy story features two female friends living on the streets of New York and their troubled world changes when one finds love. It also stars Dov Tiefenbach (“Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle, “Homeland”), Theodora (Woolley) Miranne (“The Blacklist: Redemption,” “Blue Bloods”), and Jay DeYonker (“Royally,” “Puerto Ricans in Paris”). Just one month after principal photography wrapped, the film’s co-star, E’dena Hines, was murdered by her boyfriend on the streets of New York. The story made national headlines. LANDING UP is Hines’ last on-screen performance. The film’s tragic circumstances have been a challenging aspect of bringing the film to light. Because of this violent act, and because the film tackles homelessness, the filmmakers felt it was paramount to give their audience a call to action. For the World Premiere, they raised awareness by partnering with the non-profit organizations Midnight Mission, which offers paths to self-sufficiency to men, women and children who have lost direction, and LA Family Housing, which helps people transition out of homelessness and poverty. Producer and star Stacey Maltin says, “E’dena was an incredible and loving human being who illuminated any room she entered. She had so much talent and this energy that was so raw and magnetic. She really gave herself over to playing Cece and it’s reflected in her performance. We miss her every day and wish she could have seen what she created with us. I considered her my friend and losing her impacted all of us very deeply.” Director Dani Tenenbaum adds, “It’s a sad coincidence that our film’s release date is so close to the trial of E’dena’s murder. We are hoping that this project, and E’dena’s incredible performance in it, can be a bright spot amidst this tragic real-life situation. We are doing everything in our power to pay tribute to her on-screen performance, which shows her dynamic abilities. Her contributions to ‘Landing Up’ were invaluable, and we are honoring the positive impact she had on the people around her. Our hearts go out to her family.” Landing Up had its World Premiere as an Official Selection in Competition Features at Dances With Films in June 2017 in Hollywood. The East Coast Premiere was held later that month as an Official Selection of the Soho International Film Festival in New York City where it was nominated for Best Actress and Best Feature. Family and friends of the much beloved Hines were in attendance at both screenings, including Morgan Freeman, producer Lori McCreary and the mother of Hines, Deena Adair. Maltin explains, “The film exists in two worlds: Chrissie’s life on the street and her romantic life with David. Chrissie’s life on the street is gritty and dangerous, but when Chrissie meets David, her world explodes into color. He’s everything she always wanted and the film jumps in tone and style to almost a romantic comedy feel. Her life is so far outside his realm of comprehension that he never suspects her secret.” Tenenbaum adds, “Our aim was to present the idea that you wouldn’t even know that someone is living on the streets, as it is something that many people intentionally and successfully hide. Chrissie’s carefully crafted lies lead her to very real feelings of love for David, which cause extreme and disturbing behavior. The real question we are asking is: Can you ever really know someone?” The next projects from Tenenbaum and Maltin include “Linked,” a dramedy series exploring how a group of seemingly fragmented people are connected through sex, loneliness, and transaction; and “Head,” a feature film about a gay millennial on the brink of full-time adulthood and dismayed to see all of his friends pairing up instead of getting off. The short film version of “Head” was chosen for a curated screening of the Best of NewFest 2016, and is currently streaming on REVRY TV, “the best in queerated entertainment.” Other projects from Bold Compass Films include Maltin’s short “Stronger Together,” which Shoreline Entertainment just acquired for worldwide rights. Tenenbaum has been at the forefront of virtual reality filming and is working on the VR short, “Funeral 2.0.” Synopsis: Chrissie (Stacey Maltin) is young, wild, and living on the streets. She and her best friend Cece (E’dena Hines) use their youth and good looks to their advantage, playing a con game with strangers to put a roof over their heads, while all the time fantasizing about having enough money to score their dream apartment. When Chrissie meets David (Ben Rappaport), a funny, genuine guy who works his way into her heart, she falls for him and must decide whether to confess the real circumstances of her life or continue her carefully crafted lie at all costs. https://vimeo.com/215222736

  • Watch First Trailer for THE TALE Starring Laura Dern, Sets HBO Premiere Date

The Tale HBO today released the trailer for The Tale starring Laura Dern that chronicles one woman’s powerful investigation into her own childhood memories, as she is forced to reexamine her first sexual experience – and the stories we tell ourselves in order to survive. Debuting Saturday, May 26 at 10:00 p.m. (ET/PT), the HBO Films presentation is written and directed by Sundance Grand Prize winner and Emmy(R) nominee Jennifer Fox, who based it on her own true story. The film will also be available on HBO NOW, HBO GO, HBO On Demand and partners’ streaming platforms. The Tale stars Laura Dern (Oscar(R) nominee for “Wild” and “Rambling Rose”; Emmy(R) winner for HBO’s “Big Little Lies”; Emmy(R) nominee for HBO’s “Enlightened,” “Recount” and “Afterburn”), Isabelle Nélisse (“Mama”), Elizabeth Debicki (“The Night Manager”), Jason Ritter (“Kevin (Probably) Saves the World”), Frances Conroy (Emmy(R) nominee for HBO’s “Six Feet Under”) and John Heard (Emmy(R) nominee for HBO’s “The Sopranos”), with Common (Oscar(R) winner for “Selma”) and Ellen Burstyn (Academy Award(R) winner for “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore”). An accomplished documentarian working in New York, Jennifer (Laura Dern) is completing her latest project about the lives of women around the world. She receives a series of phone calls from her mother, Nettie (Ellen Burstyn), who has found a short story Jennifer wrote at age 13, in which she describes various encounters with her riding instructor, Mrs. G (Elizabeth Debicki), and her running coach, Bill (Jason Ritter), while at summer camp. Nettie is unnerved by the implications of her daughter’s writing, but Jennifer is nonplussed. She has always looked back with fondness on the time she spent with these two charismatic adults. Egged on by Nettie and encouraged by her supportive fiancé (Common), Jennifer yearns to know more and sets out on a journey, 30 years later, to find those people from her past – the children, now adults, who also attended the camp back then – and eventually the coaches themselves. But the more she learns, the more her memories shift and the more questions she unearths. As Jennifer’s frustration mounts, she finds herself turning inward to get to the truth, imagining conversations with her 13-year-old self (Isabelle Nélisse) and even Mrs. G and Bill in an effort to understand how and why events occurred so long ago. An unforgettable meditation on the elusive nature of memory, The Tale is the first narrative feature from Jennifer Fox, whose documentary films have earned international acclaim for their groundbreaking artistry and unflinching honesty. Based on Fox’s own life story, The Tale sees the filmmaker bravely pushing forward the boundaries of conventional storytelling, creating a dialogue between past and present to illustrate the interplay between memory and trauma. “My goal was not to ask, ‘Did this happen?,’ because I always remembered it,” explains writer and director Fox. “It was, ‘How and why did it happen, and how and why did I spin it as a positive story to myself?’ There was a lightbulb moment when I was making another film about women all around the world, and it seemed that every other woman – regardless of class, culture or color – had an abuse story to tell. Their stories just floored me, because they had a system or a paradigm that looked like my story. Suddenly, I couldn’t see it as my own private little narrative and knew that it was time to investigate what happened in the open space of a fictional film.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXpYsr3AL4U The Tale is produced by Jennifer Fox, Oren Moverman, Laura Rister, Mynette Louie, Simone Pero, Lawrence Inglee, Sol Bondy, Regina K. Scully, Lynda Weinman and Reka Posta. Julie Parker Benello, Dan Cogan, Geralyn Dreyfous, Wendy Ettinger, Abigail E. Disney, Robert & Penny Fox, Jayme Lemons, Amy Rodrigue, Ali Jazayeri, Jason Van Eman, David Van Eman, Ross Marroso and Ben McConley are executive producers.
