[caption id="attachment_14136" align="aligncenter" width="1280"]
WEINER-DOG[/caption]
IFC Films has released the official trailer for Wiener-Dog, directed by Todd Solondz, about a dog and her life as she passes from owner to owner. The film opens in theaters on June 24.
Wiener-Dog, starring an all-star cast that includes Greta Gerwig, Julie Delpy, Danny DeVito, Ellen Burstyn, and Zosia Mamet, premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.
Wiener-Dog tells several stories featuring people who find their life inspired or changed by one particular dachshund, who seems to be spreading a certain kind of comfort and joy. Man’s best friend starts out teaching a young boy some contorted life lessons before being taken in by a compassionate vet tech named Dawn Wiener. Dawn reunites with someone from her past and sets off on a road trip picking up some depressed mariachis along the way. Wiener-Dog then encounters a floundering film professor, as well as an embittered elderly woman and her needy granddaughter—all longing for something more.
Twenty years ago, Todd Solondz took the Sundance Film Festival by storm when Welcome to the Dollhouse won the Grand Jury Prize at the 1996 Festival. Since then he has gone on to establish himself as one of the most uncompromising voices working in film. Wiener-Dog is vintage Solondz, brimming with brilliantly caustic and truthful observations about the human condition. He has a unique ability to find humor in the darkest of subject matter, allowing an empathetic light to shine on it.

Netflix Making Series Based on Indie Film DEAR WHITE PEOPLE
[caption id="attachment_13697" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]
Dear White People (Roadside Attractions)[/caption]
Netflix is creating / re-creating Dear White People, a comedy series based on writer/director/producer Justin Simien’s critically-acclaimed, Sundance award-winning satirical indie film released in 2014.
The 10-episode, 30-minute series will go into production later this year and will premiere on Netflix around the world in 2017.
Set among a diverse group of students of color as they navigate a predominantly white Ivy League college where racial tensions are often swept under the rug, Dear White People is a send up of “post-racial” America that also weaves a universal story about forging one’s own unique path.
The series will be written by Simien (Dear White People), who will also direct the first episode. Devon Shepard (House of Lies, Weeds), Stephanie Allain Bray (Hustle & Flow, Dear White People) and Julia Lebedev (The Dinner, Dear White People) serve as executive producers.
The original film first gained traction in 2012 with a concept trailer, underwritten by director Simien’s tax refund. By 2014, the crowd funded movie made a splash at film festivals, earning the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Talent at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.
“Justin is a gifted storyteller whose bold, unique vision is perfectly suited to Netflix,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content at Netflix. “His original film Dear White People announced the arrival of a fresh, creative voice that had everyone talking, and we’re excited to have Justin create this new series for our members worldwide.”
Writer/director/producer Simien said, “During the film’s release, I had the pleasure to speak with hundreds of students and faculty across a variety of college campuses dealing with these very issues in real time. I’m so grateful to have this platform – not only to give a voice to those too often unheard in our culture, but to also tell great stories from new points of views. From day one, Lionsgate has been remarkably supportive of the vision for the show, and working with Netflix is every bit as harmonious as I’d imagined it would be. Bringing this show to such a vibrant platform is an honor I don’t take lightly.”

Indie Thriller HARBINGER to World Premiere at Cine Las Americas International Film Festival
The fantasy/eco-thriller Harbinger, the debut feature of writer-director Cody Duckworth, will have its world premiere at the 19th Annual Cine Las Americas International Film Festival.
Austin-based entertainment company luzworks produced Harbinger, a cautionary fairy tale in the tradition of the Brothers Grimm that follows a young girl and her family who leave the city for an idyllic location to escape her nightmares, only to find more horrific experiences in reality than she could have ever dreamed.
Literature is rich with examples of tales that were not only intended for children but for adults as well. Harbinger does owe its story line to classic folklore in a modern way. Just as Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Emperor’s New Clothes” is a message about innocent children seeing things more clearly than adults, Harbinger stresses an environmental theme that is current and socially significant for all ages. The film’s tag line says it all: “Not all fairy tales are created equal.”
“I love the magic of storytelling,” intones the movies’ director Cody Duckworth, “When I was a kid, the whole world seemed all at once magical and frightening. Adults need more fairy tales in their lives. It helps explain the real world in a less invasive way … because Marvel comic book characters can only do so much.”
Harbinger most recently won a Silver Remi Award in the Fantasy/Horror category at the 49th Annual WorldFest-Houston International Film & Video Festival. However, the filmmakers chose to premiere Harbinger in Austin instead of Houston.
Writer-director Cody Duckworth was born and raised in Boerne, Texas, a small town outside of San Antonio. He studied Film and Television at Savannah College of Art and Design and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts.
Harbinger will premiere at the festival on May 7th at 4pm at The Marchesa Hall and Theatre, in Austin, Texas.

Indie Thriller FARE to World Premiere at Newport Beach Film Festival | TRAILER
FARE, a feature-length thriller filmed entirely inside a moving car over three days, makes its world premiere April 26 at the Newport Beach Film Festival.
Blurring the lines of tone and genre, “Fare” marks the feature-film debut of Charlotte, N.C.-based filmmaker Thomas Torrey. Filmed entirely inside a moving car in real traffic and shot on a limited budget, the film is ambitious, tackling mature thematic elements such as marriage, love and betrayal. The story follows a cab driver whose chance encounter with a passenger spirals into a night of darkness.
“The subject matter required an unusual approach, from conception to production,” said filmmaker Torrey. “And just when we think we know where the film is headed, it diverges quickly. Interpretations of the material have varied widely, from concretely thrilling to deeply surreal.”
Producer Justin Moretto described “Fare” as “existing in the now universal human experience of pulling out your phone to hail a cab. What would happen if we found ourselves somewhat notoriously connected with the driver who responded to our request for a lift? How would the night end?”
Presented by the Los Angeles Times and the City of Newport Beach, the Newport Beach Film Festival is one of southern California’s largest, attracting over 55,000 attendees each year. Many notable films, including the premiere of Best Picture Oscar winner “Crash,” as well as “(500) Days of Summer,” “Layer Cake,” “Pieces of April” and others have screened at the Festival.
“We’re very excited to screen Fare at our 2016 festival,” said Festival Programmer Deona Hamilton. “It’s sure to become one of our audience’s favorites.”
“Fare” will premiere on Tuesday, April 26 at 8:30 p.m. at Island Cinemas, 999 Newport Center Dr., Newport Beach, CA. Immediately following the premiere, Torrey and Moretto will join cast members from the film for a brief question-and-answer session.
Torrey and Moretto founded Charlotte, N.C.-based production company Bad Theology Pictures in 2015. Bad Theology’s mission is to produce theme-driven narratives from writers and directors who have something to say. “Fare” is Bad Theology’s first film and one of four films to be produced under the company’s debut slate offering.

WATCH Video Clips from Black & White Indie Drama I FALL DOWN
[caption id="attachment_11904" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]
I Fall Down[/caption]
The ultra low-budget indie feature film I Fall Down is now available on iTunes in North America and Ireland.
The Prairie Gothic drama was shot over two and a half years around Edmonton, Alberta. Writer/Director Christopher White harkens back to the tragic silent monster movies from cinema’s golden age, like The Phantom of the Opera and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
“In those films, the ‘monsters’ are nothing more than mistreated, unloved freaks,” he explains. “It’s not just the imagery that I borrowed, its their humanity and the audience’s empathy for these outcasts”. He credits the black-and-white reversal film for defining the tone and mood of the picture. “There’s a grit to the image, it pops, fizzles and it isn’t perfect. You get changing shades of grey which mirror the characters’ conflicts and relationships.”
Starring Emma Houghton and Tom Antoni, I Fall Down tells the story of Annessa (Houghton), a lonely teenage girl with a troubled past, hoping to leave her life behind. After a failed suicide attempt she meets Charlie (Antoni), a disfigured, child-like man who lives alone in a woodland shack. Although their mutual loneliness draws them together, their lives begin spiralling out of control when confronted by an intolerant world and Charlie’s own violent, primal nature.
The film debuted at the 2015 Macabre Faire Film Festival (Hauppauge, NY) followed by the inaugural Censured in Canada Film Festival (Toronto, ON). Critics have hailed it as a “modern Gothic story” and “an adult fairy tale”, praising Houghton for her captivating performance. She earned a Best Actress nomination at the 2014 Rosie Awards Gala alongside five other nominations for the picture, including Best Cinematography (David Baron) and Best Dramatic Production.

Sandra Oh, Anne Heche and Alicia Silverstone Star In Indie Film CATFIGHT
MPI Media Group has wrapped production on CATFIGHT, a “blistering” action-comedy written and directed by Onur Tukel (Applesauce, Summer of Blood and Richard’s Wedding), and featuring an all-star cast including Sandra Oh (Grey’s Anatomy and Sideways), Anne Heche (Hung, Psycho and Six Days Seven Nights), and Alicia Silverstone (Clueless, Beauty Shop, The Crush).
CATFIGHT is a jet-black comedy about two bitter rivals whose grudge match spans a lifetime. Struggling outsider artist Ashley Miller (Anne Heche) and wealthy housewife Veronica Salt (Sandra Oh) were close in college, but haven’t seen each other since. When they find themselves attending the same glitzy birthday party, verbal barbs lead to fisticuffs and an all-out brawl that will keep these two locked in combat for years to come. Alicia Silverstone will play Ashley’s love interest, Lisa.
“I expected the lead performances to be brilliant but what they did blew my mind,”says Tukel of Sandra Oh and Anne Heche. “The fight scenes are also insanely intense. We’ve made a very funny comedy here, but it’s also tragically dark. I’m so proud of what the cast and crew accomplished. It was so collaborative that I feel like I didn’t do much work at all. I just sat back and watched a bunch of young, passionate people pull this movie together. It was magical.”

Horror Crime Thriller THE GIRL IN THE PHOTOGRAPHS, Produced by Wes Craven, to Get a Spring 2016 Release
Nick Simon’s horror crime thriller THE GIRL IN THE PHOTOGRAPHS which had its world premiere at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival will be released in the US via Vertical Entertainment. THE GIRL IN THE PHOTOGRAPHS stars Kal Penn, Claudia Lee, Kenny Wormald, Toby Hemingway, Luke Baines, Miranda Rae Mayo, Katharine Isabelle, and Mitch Pileggi, and was executive produced by Nawaf Alghanim and horror legend Wes Craven as his last credit before he passed this summer.
Vertical plans on a Spring 2016 theatrical release.
In THE GIRL IN THE PHOTOGRAPHS, big-city glamour clashes with small-town values when a celebrity photographer and his entourage descend upon a sleepy community to investigate the bloody doings of a serial killer.
“This film drew inspiration from my deep love of horror films in my childhood, and I wanted to make a horror film that I would want to see as a fan of the genre. We got down to one of the most important elements of a classic horror film: the thrill of being scared and not knowing what is around the corner or, worse yet, knowing exactly what is around the corner,” said filmmaker Nick Simon. “I am excited to work with Vertical Entertainment on the release campaign, and I am beyond grateful to everyone who had a hand in getting this film made, especially my mentor, Wes Craven. This film is dedicated to his memory; it was an absolute dream come true to have collaborated with Wes and also renowned cinematographer Dean Cundey. I have been humbled by their kindness and passion for telling this story with me.”
And in a 2014 statement from Wes Craven attributed to him during the development stage for the film: “Sometimes you read a script and you just know. From first draft to final cut, Nick has told a unique story that will leave you wondering: Is it always good to be noticed? It has been a pleasure to work with Nick from his days in my WGA mentor group to picture lock. You’ll be hearing from him again.”
THE GIRL IN THE PHOTOGRAPHS was directed by Nick Simon; written by Osgood Perkins, Robert Morast, and Nick Simon; executive produced by Wes Craven and Nawaf Alghanim; and produced by Thomas Mahoney and Andrea Chung, with cinematography by Dean Cundey, editing by Michael Griffin, production design by Eric Fraser, and music by Nima Fakhrara. The film was made by Alghanim Entertainment.
