DOC NYC, America’s largest documentary festival, announced the full lineup for its expanded tenth anniversary edition, running November 6-15 at the IFC Center in Greenwich Village and Chelsea’s SVA Theatre and Cinépolis Chelsea. The 2019 festival includes 136 feature-length documentaries among over 300 films and events overall, making this landmark year DOC NYC’s biggest edition yet.

Little Joe, the English-language debut of rising director Jessica Hausner (Lourdes, Amour Fou) is an unsettling sci-fi feature about a mysterious new flower which emits a scent that induces happiness. The film world-premiered in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival, where its star Emily Beecham won the Best Actress award. Little Joe also stars Ben Whishaw (Mary Poppins Returns, A Very English Scandal).
The Retrospective of the 70th Berlin International Film Festival will be dedicated to the American film director, producer, and screenwriter King Vidor (1894-1982) who holds a central place in the history of US cinema. Considered a key director towards the end of the silent era and in the Golden Age of Hollywood, Vidor left a lasting mark, combining his interest in social engagement with the desire to explore in depth the potential of cinematic language.
The European Film Academy announced the nominees for the European Discovery 2019 – Prix FIPRESCI, an award presented annually as part of the European Film Awards to a director for a first full-length feature film.

Described as an unconventional ghost story, Grasshopper Films released the official trailer for Light From Light directed by Paul Harrill. The film starring Marin Ireland, Jim Gaffigan, Josh Wiggins, Atheena Frizzell, and David Cale opens November 1st in New York at the Quad Cinema and November 8th in Los Angeles at Landmark’s Nuart.
Ninety-three countries have submitted films for consideration in the International Feature Film category for the 92nd Academy Awards®. An international feature film is defined as a feature-length motion picture (more than 40 minutes) produced outside the United States with a predominantly non-English dialogue track. Ghana, Nigeria and Uzbekistan are first-time entrants.

In the 1970s, the Bronx was on fire. Left unprotected by the city government, nearly a quarter-million people were displaced as their close-knit, multiethnic neighborhood burned to the ground, reducing the community to rubble. While insidious government policies caused the devastation, it was the African American and Latino residents who bore the blame. Through rich archival and home movie footage, testimonials from retired FDNY firefighters and brass, as well as Bronx historians and community organizers, Decade of Fire reveals the real reasons for the devastation and shows what can happen when a community chooses to fight back and reclaim their neighborhood.
