  • ONE LUCKY ELEPHANT – documentary film will open in NYC on June 8; and in LA on June 24

ONE LUCKY ELEPHANT, a documentary film directed by Lisa Leeman and produced by Cristina Colissimo and Jordana Jordana Glick-Franzheim will open at Film Forum in NYC on Wednesday, June 8 and at Laemmle Theaters in LA on Friday, June 24.

Ten years in the making, this poignant, compelling saga of Flora the Circus Elephant has screened to enthusiastic audience and critical reception at numerous international film festivals, winning Best Editing Award at the Woodstock Film Festival.

Where does an elephant go after a life in the circus?  Sixteen years have passed since circus producer David Balding adopted Flora, the orphaned baby African elephant. As Flora approaches adulthood, David realizes that she is not happy performing. Ultimately, he must face the difficult truth that the circus is no place for Flora; she needs to be with other elephants. The road to Flora’s retirement, however, is a difficult and emotional journey which tests their bond in unexpected ways.  ONE LUCKY ELEPHANT eschews easy sentimentality and doesn’t shy away from examining the problems and mysteries posed by keeping wild animals in captivity, while never losing sight of the delicate love story between a man and a 10,000 pound elephant, who share feelings of loyalty, sorrow, admiration and joy.  The film is suitable for children, 10 and older.

  • ‘Queen of the Sun’ documentary opens in NY on June 10 and in LA on June 17

QUEEN OF THE SUN: What Are the Bees Telling Us?, the award winning documentary by Taggart Siegel, (director of “The Real Dirt on Farmer John”).  QUEEN OF THE SUN will open at Cinema Village in New York on Friday, June 10, and at Laemmle Theaters in Los Angeles on Friday, June 17.  Many other cities will follow.

QUEEN OF THE SUN is a profound, alternative look at the global bee crisis. Taking us on a journey through the catastrophic disappearance of bees and the mysterious world of the beehive, this engaging and ultimately uplifting film weaves an unusual and dramatic story of the heartfelt struggles of beekeepers, scientists and philosophers from around the world including Michael Pollan, Gunther Hauk and Vandana Shiva. Together they reveal both the problems and solutions in restoring humanity’s age-long relationship with bees.

Bees are the engines that keep the earth in bloom. In 1923, Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian scientist, philosopher and social innovator, predicted that in 80 to 100 years honeybees would collapse. Now, beekeepers around the United States and around the world are reporting an incredible loss of honeybees, a phenomenon deemed “Colony Collapse Disorder.” Bees are disappearing in mass numbers from their hives with no clear single explanation. The queen is there, honey is there, but the bees are gone.

QUEEN OF THE SUN presents the bee crisis as a global wake-up call and illuminates a growing movement of beekeepers, community activists and scientists who are committed to renewing a culture in balance with nature.

  • A Tribe Called Quest Documentary Announces Theatrical Release Dates

Michael Rapaport’s documentary on hip-hop legends A Tribe Called Quest, “Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest” will first open July 8 in New York City and Los Angeles and then on to  another 32 cities reports Billboard.

“Beats, Rhymes & Life” will play San Francisco, Chicago and Washington, D.C., on its second week, San Diego, Boston, Philadelphia, Minneapolis and Atlanta beginning July 22.  The screening run wraps on August 12 when it premieres in 10 cities, among them New Orleans, Indianapolis and Pittsburgh.

Having forged a 20-year run as one of the most innovative and influential hip-hop bands of all time, A Tribe Called Quest has kept a generation hungry for more of its groundbreaking music since the group’s much-publicized breakup in 1998. The band shaped a unique sound by wedding jazz-infused musicscapes to Afrocentric rhymes espousing unity and community. Its music became the anthem for cool and broke down barriers for people who had never before connected with hip-hop. In spite of unparalleled artistic success, however, the group encountered pitfalls that eventually caused its tumultuous breakup.

Beats, Rhymes & Life, the feature directorial debut of acclaimed actor Michael Rapaport, documents the inner workings and behind-the-scenes drama that follow the band even today and explores what’s next for a group many claim are the pioneers of alternative rap. Rapaport’s passion for his subjects allows them to open up to the camera, resulting in a remarkably honest, emotional portrait that does justice to this seminal band.
