FRUITVALE STATION
The winners of the 45th NAACP Image Awards were announced this weekend, and “FRUITVALE STATION” won the award for Outstanding Independent Motion Picture, and “WAR WITCH” won the Outstanding International Motion Picture award. “FREE ANGELA AND ALL POLITICAL PRISONERS” received the award for Outstanding Documentary – (Theatrical), and RICHARD PRYOR: OMIT THE LOGIC won the award for Outstanding Documentary – (Television).
Director Rob Reiner, will be honored at the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s 41st Annual Chaplin Award Gala held at Lincoln Center i New York City on Monday, April 28, 2014. According to the Film Society of Lincoln Center, ‘The event will celebrate the range of Reiner’s work from the pure comedy of This Is Spinal Tap and The Princess Bride to the intense drama of Stand By Me; the romantic comedy of When Harry Met Sally…, as well as his extensive on-screen work highlighted with the role of Michael “Meathead” Stivic in the landmark television series All in the Family.’
ACT OF KILLING
The winners of the EE British Academy Film Awards were announced in London on Sunday night, and the GREAT BEAUTY won the award for Film Not in the English Language, the ACT OF KILLING received the Documentary award, and director and writer Kieran Evans received the award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for his first feature film KELLY + VICTOR.
Songwriter and lead singer of the band Yeah Yeah ,Yeahs, Karen O will, for the first time, perform the Oscar®-nominated original song “The Moon Song” on the Oscars®, show. The Oscars, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, will air on Sunday, March 2, live on ABC.
“The Moon Song,” with music by Karen O and lyric by Karen O and Spike Jonze, was written for the film “HER,” directed by Jonze. The three other nominated songs are “Happy” from “Despicable Me 2,” “Let It Go” from “Frozen” and “Ordinary Love” from “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.”
Rock band U2 will perform their Oscar®-nominated song, “Ordinary Love” at the upcoming Oscars®, show producers announced. U2’s exclusive Oscar show performance will be the first time the band will perform the song live. The Oscars, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, will air on Sunday, March 2, live on ABC.
“Ordinary Love” was written by the group for “MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM” and is nominated for Original Song. The three other nominated songs are “Happy” from “Despicable Me 2,” “Let It Go” from “Frozen” and “The Moon Song” from “Her.”
20 FEET FROM STARDOM
The editors of the Oscar-nominated 20 FEET FROM STARDOM, which premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival beat BLACKFISH and TIM’S VERMEER to win the award for Best Edited Documentary (Feature) at the 64th annual ACE Eddie Awards. THE ASSASSINATION OF PRESIDENT KENNEDY won the award for BEST EDITED DOCUMENTARY (TELEVISION).
THE SELFISH GIANT
The 33rd London Critics’ Circle Film Section held its annual awards on Sunday night and THE SELFISH GIANT was one of the big winners, taking home two awards – British Film and Young British Performer for Conner Chapman – giving filmmakers Clio Barnard and Tracy O’Riordan and actors Chapman, Shaun Thomas and Lorraine Ashbourne a chance to celebrate on stage. Other winners present include Andre Singer, producer of Documentary of the Year THE ACT OF KILLING. The ceremony opened on a solemn note with the announcement of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s death, which was confirmed just as the event was starting. Hoffman won Supporting Actor at last year’s CC Film Awards for his role in THE MASTER.
The Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW) and the Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE) announced the winners of the 2014 Writers Guild Awards for outstanding achievement in writing and STORIES WE TELL, written by Sarah Polley won the 2014 Writers Guild Award for Best Documentary Screenplay.
Jehane Noujaim, director of THE SQUARE won DGA’s Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary
The winners of the Directors Guild of America Outstanding Directorial Achievement Awards for 2013 were announced at the 66th Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday night. Jehane Noujaim, director of THE SQUARE won DGA’s Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary. This is Ms. Noujaim’s second DGA Award and third nomination. She won the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary for STARTUP.COM in 2001 (together with Chris Hegedus) and was also nominated in this category in 2004 for CONTROL ROOM.

WE STEAL SECRETS: THE STORY OF WIKILEAKS
WE STEAL SECRETS: THE STORY OF WIKILEAKS made up for its lack of a Oscar nomination by winning the The Award for Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures at the 25th Producers Guild Awards held last night at the Beverly Hilton. Directed by Alex Gibney, the film is described as the definitive story of Julian Assange, Bradley Manning and WikiLeaks, and explores the people and events behind the upstart website that rocked the U.S. government, ushered in a new era of transparency and ignited an information war. FRUITVALE STATION was honored with the Stanley Kramer Award which was presented by star Michael B. Jordan.
SAG-AFTRA presented its coveted Actor statuette for the outstanding motion picture and primetime television performances of 2013 at the “20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards” in ceremonies attended by film and television’s leading actors, held Saturday, January 18, at the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center. Honored with awards were Cate Blanchett, Jared Leto, Matthew McConaughey and Lupita Nyong’o for performances in motion pictures.
The Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) announced the winners for the 19th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards and “DALLAS BUYERS CLUB” received two major awards, one for Best Actor, which went to Matthew McConaughey, the other going to Jared Leto for Best Supporting Actor. The award for Best Actress went to Cate Blanchett (“BLUE JASMINE”) and Adele Exarchopoulos (“BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR”) took home Best Young Actor/Actress. Best Foreign Language Film went to “BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR” and Best Documentary Feature to “20 FEET FROM STARDOM.”
