ACT OF KILLING

The winners of the EE British Academy Film Awards were announced in London on Sunday night, and the GREAT BEAUTY won the award for Film Not in the English Language, the ACT OF KILLING received the Documentary award, and director and writer Kieran Evans received the award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for his first feature film KELLY + VICTOR.

Sleeping with the Fishes won the British Short Animation award and the British Short Film award was presented to Room 8.

Songwriter and lead singer of the band Yeah Yeah ,Yeahs, Karen O will, for the first time, perform the Oscar®-nominated original song “The Moon Song” on the Oscars®, show. The Oscars, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, will air on Sunday, March 2, live on ABC.

Rock band U2 will perform their Oscar®-nominated song, “Ordinary Love” at the upcoming Oscars®, show producers announced. U2’s exclusive Oscar show performance will be the first time the band will perform the song live. The Oscars, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, will air on Sunday, March 2, live on ABC.

“Ordinary Love” was written by the group for “MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM” and is nominated for Original Song. The three other nominated songs are “Happy” from “Despicable Me 2,” “Let It Go” from “Frozen” and “The Moon Song” from “Her.”

THE SELFISH GIANT

The 33rd London Critics’ Circle Film Section held its annual awards on Sunday night and THE SELFISH GIANT was one of the big winners, taking home two awards – British Film and Young British Performer for Conner Chapman – giving filmmakers Clio Barnard and Tracy O’Riordan and actors Chapman, Shaun Thomas and Lorraine Ashbourne a chance to celebrate on stage. Other winners present include Andre Singer, producer of Documentary of the Year THE ACT OF KILLING. The ceremony opened on a solemn note with the announcement of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s death, which was confirmed just as the event was starting. Hoffman won Supporting Actor at last year’s CC Film Awards for his role in THE MASTER.

Jehane Noujaim, director of THE SQUARE won DGA’s Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary

The winners of the Directors Guild of America Outstanding Directorial Achievement Awards for 2013 were announced at the 66th Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday night. Jehane Noujaim, director of THE SQUARE won DGA’s Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary. This is Ms. Noujaim’s second DGA Award and third nomination. She won the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary for STARTUP.COM in 2001 (together with Chris Hegedus) and was also nominated in this category in 2004 for CONTROL ROOM.

The Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) announced the winners for the 19th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards and “DALLAS BUYERS CLUB” received two major awards, one for Best Actor, which went to Matthew McConaughey, the other going to Jared Leto for Best Supporting Actor. The award for Best Actress went to Cate Blanchett (“BLUE JASMINE”) and Adele Exarchopoulos (“BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR”) took home Best Young Actor/Actress. Best Foreign Language Film went to “BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR” and Best Documentary Feature to “20 FEET FROM STARDOM.”

The Critics’ Choice Movie Awards are bestowed annually by the BFCA to honor the finest in cinematic achievement. The BFCA is the largest film critics organization in the United States and Canada, representing more than 280 television, radio and online critics.  BFCA members are the primary source of information for today’s film going public.

The nominations for the 86th Academy Awards were announced this morning and although there were quite a few snubs, films like DALLAS BUYERS CLUb and NEBRASKA received multiple nominations including Best Picture. There were not many surprises in the Documentary category, with THE ACT OF KILLING, CUTIE AND THE BOXER, DIRTY WARS, THE SQUARE and 20 FEET FROM STARDOM grabbing nominations. Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2013 will be presented on Oscar® Sunday, March 2, 2014, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center® and televised live on the ABC Television Network.
