During the nominations process, all voting members of the Music Branch will receive a Reminder List of works submitted in the category and a DVD copy of the song clips.  Members will be asked to watch the clips and then vote in the order of their preference for not more than five achievements in the category.  The five achievements receiving the highest number of votes will become the nominations for final voting for the award.  A maximum of two songs may be nominated from any one film.

To be eligible, a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film.  A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits.

The 87th Academy Awards® nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 15, 2015, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

The Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 22, 2015, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center® in Hollywood, and will be televised live by the ABC Television Network.  The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

To be eligible, the original score must be a substantial body of music that serves as original dramatic underscoring, and must be written specifically for the motion picture by the submitting composer.  Scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other preexisting music, diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs, or assembled from the music of more than one composer shall not be eligible.

The Russian film Leviathan won the 8th Asia Pacific Screen Award (APSA) for Best Feature Film, the region’s highest accolade in film at the awards ceremony held in Brisbane, Australia.  The APSA for Achievement in Directing, for the third time in the history of the event, went to Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan for his already Palme d’Or winning film Winter Sleep (Turkey, France, Germany).  The awards recognize and promote cinematic excellence and cultural diversity of the world’s fastest-growing film region.

Selma

Selma, described as the first studio film to center around Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is the big winner among the critics representing the African-American Film Critics Association (AAFCA). Selma earned multiple awards from AAFCA for Best Director, (Ava DuVernay); Best Actor for Oyelowo and Best Song for its John Legend/Common theme song, “Glory”. AAFCA will hold its annual award ceremony and dinner on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at 7:00pm the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, CA.

“Our members found the output of cinema released this year to be a truly insightful mix of titles that reflect the world we live in. The members of AAFCA were especially pleased with this range of storytelling supported by the studios that gave voice to the many sides of the experience of black people in America and around the world,” says AAFCA president Gil Robertson. “We had a lot to pick from this year from Belle, Dear White People, Top Five,Timbuktu and Selma and hope the industry will continue to provide a platform for diversity on the big screen.”

The Washington, D.C. Area Film Critics Association (WAFCA) announced its top picks for the year, and “Boyhood”  won the coveted “Best Film” spot.  “Boyhood” also won for Best Director (Richard Linklater), Best Supporting Actress (Patricia Arquette), and Best Youth Performance by Ellar Coltrane, the young boy who literally becomes a man before audiences’ eyes. However, “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” was the big winner with five awards. “Birdman,” directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, and marking the explosive return of ’80s star Michael Keaton (winner of this year’s Best Actor award), also snatched Best Acting Ensemble, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing. 

“Life Itself,” about the life and career of the late dean of film criticism, Roger Ebertwon for Best Documentary. “Force Majeure,” a Swedish film about a family confronting their relationship demons while on a skiing holiday, won for Best Foreign Language Film.

The Cinema Eye Honors for Nonfiction Filmmaking announced the five nominees for its annual Cinema Eye Heterodox Award. The Cinema Eye Heterodox Award honors a narrative fiction film that imaginatively incorporates nonfiction strategies, content and/or modes of production. The five films nominated this year for the Cinema Eye Heterodox Award are:

Boyhood directed by Richard Linklater

Heaven Knows What directed by Josh and Benny Safdie

A Spell to Ward off the Darkness directed by Ben Rivers and Ben Russell

Stop the Pounding Heart directed by Roberto Minervini

Under the Skin directed by Jonathan Glazer

“These nominees prove once again that the blurred lines between fiction/non-fiction, actor/non-actor and verite/script continue to thrill and provoke,”  said Esther Robinson, Chair of the Cinema Eye Honors.  “Year five of the Heterodox award gives us farmers, loners, aliens, addicts, and adolescents.  The films ask thrillingly big questions about childhood, time, utopia, modernity, sexuality and what happens when you drop a come-hither Scarlett Johansson into the Scottish countryside with a hidden camera. “

The 2015 Screen Actors Guild Award nominations were announced this morning and Birdman, lead the list with four nominations, including Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for Michael Keaton, Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for EdwardNorton, Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for EmmaStone and Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. The American Film Institute (AFI) announced today the official selections of AFI AWARDS 2014 – 11 outstanding films and 10 outstanding television programs deemed culturally and artistically representative of the year’s most significant achievements in the art of the moving image.

Boyhood

The Online Film Critics Society announced the nominees for the 18th annual OFCS awards for excellence in film. “Boyhood” lead the field with 6 nominations including Best Picture and Best Director for Richard Linklater. Other nominees for Best Picture include  “The Grand Budapest Hotel,”  “Ida,” “The Lego Movie,” “Mommy,” “Nightcrawler,” “Selma,” “Two Days, One Night,” “Whiplash,” and “Under the Skin.”  The 2014 OFCS award winners will be announced on Monday, December 15th.

Founded in 1997, the Online Film Critics Society is the largest and oldest organization of its kind, and a key catalyst in the expansion of Internet-based film journalism. The OFCS represents over 275 members worldwide.

Past OFCS Awards winners that went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture include “12 Years a Slave,” “Argo,” “The Hurt Locker,” “American Beauty,” and  “No Country for Old Men.”

Snowpiercer

The Boston Online Film Critics Association picked Snowpiercer, directed by Bong Joon-ho, and starring Chris Evans, Song Kang-ho, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, John Hurt, and Ed Harris, as Best Picture of 2014. In this sci-fi epic from director Bong Joon Ho (The Host, Mother), a failed global-warming experiment kills off most life on the planet.  The final survivors board the SNOWPIERCER, a train that travels around the globe via a perpetual-motion engine. When cryptic messages incite the passengers to revolt, the train thrusts full-throttle towards disaster.

“Life Itself” won Best Documentary

Again, another group of film critics, pick “Boyhood” as Best Film of 2014; this time, the New York Film Critics Online picked “Boyhood” as Best Film of 2014, and Richard Linklater as Best Director.  Patricia Arquette snagged the award for Best Supporting Actress, for her amazing performance in “Boyhood.”  “Birdman” the other favorite film of the award season, received the awards for Best Screenplay, Best Ensemble and Best Cinematography.  And in a bit of a surprise, the Roger Eberts film “Life Itself” won Best Documentary beating the perennial favorite documentary, “Citizenfour.”
