Jeffrey Wright, star of American Fiction, and Rustin, will receive the Montecito Award at the 39th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Wright will receive the award on Thursday, February 15th, 2024 at an in-person conversation about his career leading up to this year’s performance in American Fiction, written and directed by Cord Jefferson.
Todd Haynes’s May December, Kelly Reichardt’s Showing Up, and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon claimed the top spots among films released in the U.S. in 2023 on Film Comment’s annual end-of-year survey. Of the films that screened at festivals worldwide but have not yet announced stateside distribution, Eduardo Williams’s The Human Surge 3, Lisandro Alonso’s Eureka, and Víctor Erice’s Close Your Eyes received top rankings.
Bobi Wine: The People’s President, the documentary directed by Moses Bwayo and Christopher Sharp on pop star-turned-politician Bobi Wine, as he runs in Uganda’s 2021 presidential election, won the top award – Best Feature Documentary at the 39th IDA Documentary Awards.
Barbra Streisand has been named the 59th recipient of SAG-AFTRA’s highest tribute: the SAG Life Achievement Award for career achievements and humanitarian accomplishments. Streisand will be presented with the award at the 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, which will stream live on Netflix Saturday, Feb. 24, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT from the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall.
Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden announced the twenty-five films been selected for the 2023 Library of Congress National Film Registry. This year’s selections date back more than 100 years to a 1921 Kodak educational film titled “A Movie Trip Through Filmland” , to 2000’s Black love story “Love & Basketball,” to 2013’s Oscar-winning “12 Years a Slave” and the Oscar-winning documentary “20 Feet from Stardom.”
Barbie leads the film nominations for the 29th annual Critics Choice Awards earning 18 nominations including Best Picture and Best Comedy. The film received several acting nominations including Best Actress for Margot Robbie, Best Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling and Best Supporting Actress for America Ferrera. Ariana Greenblatt is also up for Best Young Actor/Actress, and the cast garnered a Best Acting Ensemble nomination. Greta Gerwig earned a nod for Best Director and both Gerwig and Noah Baumbach are contenders for Best Original Screenplay.
The Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA) voted The Zone of Interest the Best Picture of 2023, along with Best Director for Jonathan Glazer, Best Actress for Sandra Hüller (who also won for The Zone of Interest) and Best Music/Score.
Sight and Sound, the BFI’s international film magazine named Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon the Best Film of the Year 2023.
Barbie lead the film nominations for the 81st annual Golden Globe Awards with nine, followed closely by Oppenheimer with eight. Other films receiving multiple nominations include Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things each receiving seven and Past Lives with five.
Anatomy of a Fall by Justine Triet was the big winner of the night at European Film Awards 2023, winning five awards including European Film, Director, Actress for Sandra Hüller, Scriptwriter and the Excellence Award for Editing.
Danielle Brooks will receive the Spotlight Award, Actress at the Palm Springs International Film Awards for her performance in The Color Purple. The Film Awards will take place on January 4, 2024, at the Palm Springs Convention Center, with the festival running through January 15, 2024.
