Filmmakers Aaron Sorkin and Chloé Zhao will receive honors at SFFILM Awards Night, which this year has shifted from its traditional seated dinner and onstage presentation format to a dynamic live-streamed showcase, taking place December 9.

The Czech biographical drama Charlatan (Czech: Šarlatán) directed by Agnieszka Holland has been selected by the Czech Film and Television Academy (CFTA) to represent Czech Republic in the Oscars’ 2021 race for Best International Feature Film.

Philippe Lacôte’s sophomore feature, Night of the Kings has been chosen as the Ivory Coast submission for the 93rd Academy Awards. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival and went on to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival and New York Film Festival. Night of the Kings will be released by NEON, with plans to be announced at a later date.

Visar Morina’s Exile (Exil) which had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival will represent Kosovo in the International Feature Film category of the 93rd Academy Awards. Exile also screened at the Berlin International Film Festival and the Sarajevo Film Festival where the film won the top prize, the Heart of Sarajevo award.

The European Film Academy announced the six nominees for the European Discovery 2020 – Prix FIPRESCI, an award presented annually as part of the European Film Awards to a director for a first full-length feature film.

The European Film Academy is introducing a new award category – the EFA Award for Innovative Storytelling, that will be awarded for the first time at the 33rd European Film Awards on December 12. In its first edition, the award will be presented to director Mark Cousins for Women Make Film: A New Road Movie Through Cinema.

Cineworld, parent company of Regal, announced that it will be temporarily suspending operations at all of its 536 Regal theatres in the U.S., as of Thursday, October 8, 2020. These closures will impact approximately 40,000 employees across the U.S.
