Italy has selected Gianfranco Rosi’s Notturno, as the country’s official entry for the Academy Award in the Best International Film category. From the Oscar-nominated director of Fire at Sea, the observational documentary captures the peoples and places ravaged along the borders between Syria, Iraq, Kurdistan, and Lebanon.

Lili Horvát’s “Preparations to Be Together for an Unknown Period of Time” (Felkészülés meghatározatlan ideig tartó együttlétre) has been selected as the Hungarian entry in the International Feature Film category for the 2021 Academy Awards.

British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) announced the long list for the 2020 Best British Short Film award. The 16 films listed below were chosen from over 300 entries. BIFA also announced this year’s long list in its highly-competitive Best International Independent Film category, and Best Documentary category, celebrating the finest independent films of the year.

Sundance Institute will honor filmmaker Radha Blank with the 2020 Vanguard Award presented by Acura, given annually to an artist whose work highlights the art of storytelling and creative independence. The award honors the artistic achievement of her feature film directorial debut The Forty-Year-Old Version, which premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and was developed by Blank at the Institute’s Labs. The Institute invites fans and supporters of independent cinema to celebrate Radha with a special event on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 hosted on Sundance Collab, the community platform for creators from around the world. The celebration, free for all, will feature Octavia Spencer, who was an advisor to Blank at the Labs, and a conversation between Blank and 2019 Vanguard Award recipient Lulu Wang (The Farewell).

The Critics Choice Association (CCA) announced the nominees for the inaugural Critics Choice Super Awards, honoring the most popular, fan-obsessed genres across both television and movies, including Superhero, Science Fiction/Fantasy, Horror, Action and Animation.

Thomas Vinterberg drama ‘Another Round’, starring Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Magnus Millang, Lars Ranthe, about four weary high school teachers experimenting with the liberating effects of alcohol, has been selected as Denmark’s submission in the International Feature Film category for the 2021 Academy Awards.

Dick Johnson is Dead took home the most prestigious award for Best Documentary Feature as well as Best Director for Kirsten Johnson at the fifth annual Critics Choice Documentary Awards which was not held in person due to the ongoing pandemic.

The European Film Academy announced the nominations for the 33rd European Film Awards. Films nominated for Best European Film include Another Round, Berlin Alexanderplatz, Corpus Christi, Martin Eden, The Painted Bird and Undine. Films nominated for Best European Documentary include Acasa – My Home, Collective (Colectiv), Gunda, Little Girl (Petite Fille), Saudi Runaway and The Cave.

Forty-one films and series are nominated for this year for the 30th Annual IFP Gotham Awards, considered one of the leading awards for independent film and signaling the kick-off to the film awards season. Best Feature nominations went to The Assistant, First Cow, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, Nomadland, and Relic, becoming the first time all of the best feature nominees are directed by women. In total, eleven competitive awards will be presented to independent features and series.

The Kenya Film Commission selected DOC NYC-bound The Letter as the country’s official entry for the Academy Award for Best International Film. The film commission describes it as ‘filmed with a gentle pace and incredible closeness, The Letter is an intimate family portrait that reveals an indestructible female power.’
