SFFILM announced the four winners of 2020 SFFILM Documentary Film Fund grants totaling $80,000, which support feature-length documentaries in post-production. The film My Little Sister (Schwesterlein) directed by Stéphanie Chuat and Véronique Reymond has been submitted by Switzerland to represent the country in the International Feature Film category for the 93rd Academy Awards. The film starring Nina Hoss, Lars Eidinger, along with legendary Swiss actress Marthe Keller celebrated its world premiere in Competition at the 2020 Berlin International Film Festival.

The European Film Academy and EFA Productions announced the EFA Documentary Selection, a list of 13 European documentaries recommended for a nomination for this year’s European Film Awards. There are 14 European countries represented in this year’s EFA Documentary Selection.

Academy Award–nominated and six-time Grammy Award–winning composer Terence Blanchard will be honored with the TIFF Variety Artisan Award at this year’s TIFF Tribute Awards during the 45th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival. The award recognizes a distinguished creative who has excelled at their craft and made an outstanding contribution to cinema and entertainment. Last year’s Variety Artisan Award was given to Academy Award–winning cinematographer Roger Deakins.

Due to Covid-19 and the related restrictions, the European Film Academy is announcing the EFA Feature Film Selection 2020 in two steps. Today, EFA revealed the titles of the 32 films in the first part, the second part will be announced in September. This will allow the inclusion of films that would have premiered by May 31, 2020 – be it at a festival or at a regular cinema – but could not due to the pandemic, provided they will premiere theatrically or online before the end of November 2020. Together, the films from part 1 and 2 form the EFA Feature Film Selection, the list of feature-length fiction films recommended for a nomination for the European Film Awards 2020. The films have been selected by a committee consisting of the EFA Board and invited experts.

The animated film The Power of Hope will be in Shorts By The Sea in September and features a song by 13-year-old filmmaker Kalia Love Jones and co- writer Grammy-nominated producer Ben Franklin. Kalia Love Jones will be featured in Univision’s Primios Juventud on Thursday, August 13th at 7pm. Poland is officially kicking off the 2021 Oscar race by selecting Never Gonna Snow Again (Śniegu już nigdy nie będzie) directed by Malgorzata Szumowska and Michał Englert, as the country’s entry in the competition for Best International Feature Film.
