
John Singleton, the Oscar nominated film director, screenwriter and producer died Monday April 29 in Los Angeles after suffering a stroke on April 17, 2019. Earlier today, Singleton’s family announced he was removed from life support. He was 51.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center, celebrating its 50th anniversary, is getting a new name – Film at Lincoln Center – along with a slate of free summer programming and a renewed commitment to its mission. The Film at Lincoln Center logo was designed by Spagnola & Associates.

The Seattle International Film Festival announced the 2019 Film Teams for the four feature films – two documentary and two narratives, and Industry Mentors for the New Works-in-Progress (WIP) Forum.

The Academy’s Board of Governors has approved Oscars rules for the 92nd Academy Awards, including changing the Foreign Language Film category name to International Feature Film. The category name change does not change any existing category rules, the submission process, or eligibility requirements; however the shortlist for the International Feature Film award will be expanding to ten films.

Film Independent has selected 13 filmmakers and eight projects for its 2019 Documentary Lab, an intensive two-week program designed to help filmmakers who are currently in post-production on their feature-length documentary films.

The Peabody Awards revealed the eight winning films released in 2018 in the Documentary category, including Dolores, profile of unsung activists Dolores Huerta; A Dangerous Son on the challenges faced by parents of children living with mental health issues; and Minding the Gap, on the healing skateboarding provides for three young men transitioning into adulthood.

The Peabody Awards Board of Jurors announced the 60 nominees that represent the most compelling and empowering stories released in broadcasting and digital media during 2018. Thirty winners selected from amongst these nominees will be announced beginning next week.

Film Independent has selected five up and coming directors for its 19th annual Directing Lab, an intensive eight-week program designed to support emerging independent film directors on their feature films. This year’s creative advisors and guest speakers include Andrew Ahn, Ruth Atkinson, Daniel Barnz, Ava Berkofsky, Destin Cretton, Catherine Hardwicke, Tina Mabry, Alex O’Flinn, Lisa Robertson, and Emily Schweber.

Award-winning filmmaker and advertising executive Deborah Riley Draper will be the featured speaker at the 2019 Black Women Film Network (BWFN) Summit Welcome Reception and Scholarship Awards hosted by Georgia Power on Thursday, March 7 at 6:30pm. Draper will discuss her career and achievements in a one-on-one conversation moderated by BWFN Scholarship Recipient and E! Networks Sr. Director of Content Strategy Jaunice Sills.

Eleven screenwriters have been selected to participate in Sundance Institute’s seventh annual Screenwriters Intensive in Los Angeles, to take place February 28 – March 1, 2019. Part of the Institute’s commitment to introducing the industry to an inclusive pipeline of exciting new storytellers, the Intensive is a two-day workshop for writers or writer/directors from underrepresented communities developing their first fiction feature. Fellows at the Intensive will advance the art and craft of their work under the guidance of experienced filmmakers and in collaboration with Institute’s Feature Film Program.

Green Book took home the Oscar for Best Picture at the 91st Oscars. Regina King, Mahershala Ali, Rami Malek and Olivia Colman won in the acting categories and Spike Lee brought home Oscar for the very first time for Adapted Screenplay as a co-writer of BlacKkKlansman, and Free Solo won for best documentary. Roma won three including, best foreign language and another directing Oscar for Alfonso Cuarón.
