
RaMell Ross’s Nickel Boys was the big winner of the Toronto Film Critics Association (TFCA) 28th annual awards, winning three Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Ross and Best Adapted Screenplay for Ross and Joslyn Barnes.

With awards season in full swing, several films, including major contenders, are hitting U.S. theaters this Friday. RaMell Ross’ Golden Globe-nominated drama Nickel Boys tells the story of two Black teenagers confronting racism and segregation in 1960s Jim Crow-era Florida. Tim Fehlbaum’s September 5 recounts the real-life tragedy of the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics through the perspective of a sports broadcasting team. Also opening is the latest installment in Sony’s Spider-Man villain universe, Kraven the Hunter, and the animated prequel The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.

Originally premiering at the 2023 Sydney Film Festival, Birdeater, the feature directorial debut of filmmaking duo Jack Clark and Jim Weir, is set to arrive in U.S. theaters and on VOD early next year.

New York Jewish Film Festival (NYJFF) returns for its 34th edition at Film at Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater from January 15 through January 29, 2025.

The Chicago Film Critics Association awarded Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist the top honor of Best Picture of the year. Conclave and Wicked lead the nominees in the film category for the 30th Critics Choice Awards with 11 nominations each.

Denis Villeneuve will receive the Visionary Award for Dune: Part Two at the Palm Springs International Film Awards. The Film Awards will take place on January 3, 2025, at the Palm Springs Convention Center, with the festival running January 2-13, 2025.
