Mark Cuban is reportedly exploring a possible sale of his movie theater group Landmark Theatres and independent film distributor Magnolia Pictures by putting them up for auction. In an email to The Hollywood Reporter, he emphasized that he still feels the companies are “a great business” and thatt he is “just testing the market.”
Magnolia Pictures announced they have acquired North American rights to JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI, a documentary about the life and work of master sushi chef Jiro Ono. The directorial debut of David Gelb, JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI had its world premiere at the Berlinale, and makes its North American premiere this Thursday, April 21st, at the Tribeca Film Festival. Magnolia is planning a theatrical release for the film later this year.

The film, which was shot in Montreal, and features the brilliant Canadian actors Isabel Blaise, along with the handsome Patrick Labbe, follows the lives of two people as their futures collide after a tragic accident. Blaise plays Nathalie, a pregnant woman, and Braff plays a prescription drug dealer- Henry Welles, a huge leap from his comedic, long-running role as “JD” on the beloved TV series “Scrubs.”
Tim Hetherington, the director and producer of the Oscar-nominated Afghan war documentary “Restrepo,” was killed while covering the Libyan conflict in the city of Misurata on Wednesday, and three photographers working beside him were wounded, one fatally, when they came under fire. He was 40 years.

The Tribeca Film Festival (TFF), announced its jurors – a diverse and talented group of 38 individuals, including award-winning filmmakers and screenwriters, celebrated actors, respected journalists and media pioneers. 52 entries from 32 countries, along with 523 entries from students representing 136 U.S. colleges and universities, are in competition for the 2011 Student Academy Awards. The competition – now in its 38th year – will culminate in the awards presentation, which will include screenings of the winning films, on Saturday, June 11, at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
Rooftop Films returns Friday, May 13th on the roof of the New Design High School in the Lower East Side, Manhattan, New York City, and continue with screenings throughout the city every weekend through August 20.
Prior to the screening of the Festival’s closing night film, Potiche, the RiverRun International Film Festival honored its 2011 Jury and Audience Award winners by handing out 22 awards to outstanding features and shorts.
