BIRDMAN OR THE UNEXPECTED VIRTUE OF IGNORANCE, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, bested BOYHOOD to win Best Feature at the 24th annual Gotham Independent Film Awards held in New York City on Monday night. The film also won Best Actor for Michael Keaton, who played a movie star trying to make a comeback on Broadway. BOYHOOD directed by Richard Linklater did not leave empty handed, the film won the Gotham Independent Film Audience Award. CITIZENFOUR, the Edward Snowden documentary, won the award for Best Documentary.

“Birdman” Leads Film Independent Spirit Awards Nominations with 6 Nods

The nominations were announced this morning for the 2015 Spirit Awards, and Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) lead the list with 6 nods including Best Feature, and Best Director for Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Other nominees for Best Feature included Boyhood,Love is Strange, Selma and Whiplash. Inherent Vice was selected to receive the Robert Altman Award, which is bestowed upon one film’s director, casting director and ensemble cast. Film Independent also awarded a Special Distinction Award to Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher for its uniqueness of vision, honesty of direction and screenwriting, superb acting and achievement on every level of filmmaking.

St Louis-Set Drama “The Makings of You” to Kick off Lineup for 23rd Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival

The 23rd Annual Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival (SLIFF) will be held November 13 to 23, and will screen 389 films, including 89 narrative features, 76 documentary features, and 224 shorts. The festival will open on Thursday, Nov. 13, with the premiere of “The Makings of You,” a St. Louis-set and -shot drama by Matt Amato. An award-winning director of music videos and commercials, Amato returned to his hometown of St. Louis to shoot his feature debut, which stars Jay R. Ferguson (of “Mad Men”) and Sheryl Lee and Grace Zabriskie (both of “Twin Peaks”). Ferguson and Zabriskie will attend.

The 2014 Virginia Film Festival lineup will return to Charlottesville from November 6-9, and officially kick off with the World Premiere of Big Stone Gap, filmed on location in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, and based on the popular series of books by noted author and Big Stone Gap native Adriana Trigiani. The film stars Ashley Judd as the small town’s self-appointed middle-age spinster who keeps countless secrets before discovering one of her own that will change her life forever. 5 to 7, the tale of a “cinq-a-sept” romance, and love’s power to conquer even the most insurmountable of obstacles, has been selected as the Centerpiece Film, and for the closing film, the festival will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Dead Poets Society.

Complete Lineup for 43rd New Directors/New Films; Ana Lily Amirpour’s A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT is the Opening Night Film

A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT

The complete lineup was unveiled for the 43rd edition of New Directors/New Films taking place March 19 to March 30, 2014 in New York City and presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and The Museum of Modern Art. This year’s festival will screen 27 international feature films and 13 short films. The opening night feature is Ana Lily Amirpour’s A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT, a Persian, black-and-white, noirish thriller that recently bowed at the Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim and is based on a graphic novel written by Amirpour about a young female vampire who stalks the streets of a fictional lonely Iranian ghost town. The closing night feature, 20,000 DAYS ON EARTH, by visual artists Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, also had its premiere at Sundance, where it won directing and editing awards in the World Cinema Documentary category. The film follows a fictitious 24 hours in the life of musical and cultural icon Nick Cave as he is writing his 2013 album “Push the Sky Away.”
