Several of the films have not yet had their required Los Angeles and New York qualifying releases. Submitted features must fulfill the theatrical release requirements and comply with all of the category’s other qualifying rules in order to advance in the voting process. A shortlist of 15 films will be announced in December.
Films submitted in the Documentary Feature category may also qualify for Academy Awards in other categories, including Best Picture, provided they meet the requirements for those categories.
The 88th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 14, 2016, at 5:30 a.m. PT at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
The 88th Oscars® will be held on Sunday, February 28, 2016, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center® in Hollywood, and will be televised live by the ABC Television Network at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. 2015 Jalopnik Film Festival Moves to LA, Opens with WINNING: THE RACING LIFE OF PAUL NEWMAN
The Jalopnik Film Festival is going on a road trip for 2015, motoring west to Los Angeles for its 3rd Annual edition, set to run the weekend of Friday, September 25th through Saturday, September 26th, complete with Mazda as its new presenting sponsor.
The 2015 Jalopnik Film Festival will kick off on Friday at the Santa Monica Airport’s Barker Hangar with a gala screening of Adam Carolla’s new documentary Winning: The Racing Life of Paul Newman, followed by a Q&A with Carolla and an after-party. Prior to the screening there will be an exclusive Ride & Drive Experience with the all-new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata.

Saturday will feature a full day of screenings at The Ace Hotel in Downtown L.A., with a mix of new documentaries and narrative films including Bent-Jorgen Perlmutt’s Havana Motor Club, which celebrates Cuba’s racing culture, a screening of Steve McQueen: The Man and Le Mans, a doc chronicling actor Steve McQueen’s passion for racing, directed by Gabriel Clarke and John McKenna, and a screening of Daniel Junge’s Being Evel , a documentary about legendary daredevil Evel Knievel, featuring appearances by Johnny Knoxville, Tony Hawk, George Hamilton, and the late Frank Gifford.
In addition to the new movies, the festival also will offer film buffs rare big-screen showings of two epic car-chase fan favorites, George Miller’s original Mad Max and John Frankenheimer’s Ronin.
Other films include Luke Huxham’s In Loving Memory, a look at the famous (and deadly) Isle of Man TT motorcycle race, and a sneak preview of The Smoking Tire’s All Cars Go to Heaven: Volume Two.
The festival also will include a reader-submitted short film competition, judged by Carolla, L.A. Angels pitcher C.J. Wilson, filmmaker Jeff Zwart, and TV personality Spike Feresten.
Discussing this year’s fest and the move to LA, Jalopnik Editor-in-Chief Matt Hardigree said, “Jalopnik believes that cars matter, so it’s great to have a partner like Mazda who believes that driving matters. It’s also a dream to bring the festival to Los Angeles, where car culture meets film culture and the weather is always great.”

BEING EVEL, WELCOME TO HAPPINESS Win Top Awards at 15th deadCENTER Film Festival
A documentary about the complicated legacy of Evel Knievel and a metaphysical drama about a children’s book author won top honors at the 15th deadCENTER Film Festival, held June 10-14 in downtown Oklahoma City.
“Being Evel,” (pictured above) by Academy Award-winning director Daniel Junge was selected as Best Documentary Feature, and Best Narrative Feature was awarded to Director Oliver Thompson’s “Welcome to Happiness.”
A generation of Americans grew up worshipping self-styled hero Evel Knievel – watching him every Saturday on Wide World of Sports and buying his Ideal toys. For producer/subject Johnny Knoxville and so many others, he was the ultimate antidote to the disenchantment of the 70’s. But few knew the incredible and often complex aspects of his epic life, which, like his jumps, was sometimes glorious and sometimes disastrous. With an entire genre of sports ascending from his daring inventiveness, now is the time to look at this extreme man and his complicated legacy.
“Being Evel” producers include Johnny Knoxville, Jeff Tremaine, Mat Hoffman, Brendan Kiernan, Justin Moore-Lewy and Daniel Junge.
“Welcome to Happiness” (pictured above) is a metaphysical drama featuring Nick Offerman about a children’s book author who is the gatekeeper to a mysterious door in his closet that only allows certain people to enter. When he learns where the door leads, his life is forever changed.
Best Narrative Short honors went to “This Way Up” by Director Jeremy Cloe, and Christopher André Marks’ “Tiger Hood” won Best Documentary Short.
“Skid,” by Ryan “Staples” Scott, won for Best Oklahoma Feature, and “Course of Food,” directed by Christopher Hunt and produced by Chef Marc Dunham, was chosen as Best Oklahoma Short.
Yoko Okumura’s “Kimi Kabuki” was voted Best Student Film.
Special Jury honors went to “Best of Enemies” in the documentary category, and “The Overnight” for narrative.

2015 Dallas Intl Film Festival Announces First 10 Films
PLAYING IT COOLThe 9th annual Dallas International Film Festival taking place April 9-19, 2015, announced the first 10 films, including the North American premiere of PLAYING IT COOL, a romantic comedy starring Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan.
Making its world premiere at this year’s Festival is the Civil War drama ECHOES OF WAR, starring James Badge Dale, Ethan Embry and William Forsythe.
Director John Landis will receive the Dallas Star Award at Dallas Film Society Honors on Friday, April 17 at the Highland Hotel in Dallas. The Dallas Star Award honors individuals who have made significant contributions to modern cinema and the advancement of the art of film. The award presentation will be followed by a special screening of John Landis’s 1980 comedy classic THE BLUES BROTHERS on Saturday, April 18. John Landis has left a lasting impression on the film world as director of many iconic comedies such as NATIONAL LAMPOON’S ANIMAL HOUSE, ¡3 AMIGOS!, COMING TO AMERICA, TRADING PLACES, and INTO THE NIGHT. John Landis also wrote and directed AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON and the groundbreaking theatrical short MICHAEL JACKSON’S THRILLER.
The Festival will also celebrate the incredible life and career of Texas writer, actor and producer L.M. Kit Carson by featuring his 1983 film BREATHLESS. Carson is recognized for writing the Palme d’Or winning PARIS, TEXAS, and also for inventing the first ‘mockumentary’ with his film DAVID HOLZMAN’S DIARY.
