‘Chi-Raq’ ‘A Ballerina’s Tale’ Among 2015 African-American Film Critics Award Winners

Straight Outta Compton, the surprise summer box office hit centered on the 90’s rap group N.W.A., captured an overwhelming majority of the votes cast by members of the African-American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) for the 7th AAFCA Awards, including Best Picture. Best Independent Film went to Spike Lee’s “Chi-Raq”, and Best Documentary went to “A Ballerina’s Tale,” (pictured above) the feature documentary about ballerina Misty Copeland. “Our members found an interesting theme in many of the films released this year, giving a voice to communities who have generally been underserved and marginalized in society,” says AAFCA president Gil Robertson. “With movies like Straight Outta Compton, Chi-Raq, 3 1/2 Minutes and Dope, filmmakers brought to life many storylines that are a reflection of what’s happening in our world today, including the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Pictures like Carol and The Danish Girl, give voice to another community that is too often ridiculed and ignored by the status-quo. With Creed, the members of AAFCA found an opportunity to celebrate a film with “a” universal message of hope, honor and perseverance – something that everyone can embrace. ‘Spotlight’ ‘Amy’ ‘The Look of Silence’ Among Boston Society of Film Critics 2015 Award Winners

The Boston Society of Film Critics picked ‘Spotlight’ as the Best Film of 2015. ‘Spotlight’ directed by Academy Award-nominee Tom McCarthy and starring Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber, Brian d’Arcy James and Stanley Tucci, tells the riveting true story of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Boston Globe investigation into allegations of abuse in the Catholic Church. ‘Spotlight’ was also given the awards for Best Screenplay and Best Ensemble Cast. ‘Spotlight’ ‘Amy’ ‘Son of Saul’ Among Los Angeles Film Critics Association Winners

‘Spotlight’ was named Best Picture of 2015 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA), besting ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ which received Runner Up honors. ‘Amy’ beat ‘The Look of Silence’ for Best Documentary honors, and ‘Son of Saul’ took Best Foreign Film, with Runner Up honors going to ‘The Tribe.’ The winners will be honored at the official awards ceremony on January 9, which will be dedicated to the late Belgian director Chantal Akerman. Film editor Anne V. Coates, who won the Oscar for film-editing for her work on 1963’s “Lawrence of Arabia,” will be honored with the group’s career achievement award. CAROL Leads Nominations for 2016 Spirit Awards

Carol directed by Todd Haynes lead nominations for the 2016 Spirit Awards with 6 nods including Best Feature, Best Director, Best Female Lead for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, Best Sreenplay and Best Cinematography. Cate Blanchett to be Honored at Palm Springs International Film Festival

Two-time Academy Award Winning Actress Cate Blanchett will receive the Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress at the upcoming 27th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival for her amazing performances in “Carol” and “Truth”. The festival runs January 1 to 11, 2016. Carol, an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Price of Salt, follows two women from very different backgrounds, unhappily married Carol (Blanchett) and department store clerk Therese (Rooney Mara), who find themselves in an unexpected love affair in 1950s New York. 2015 Lone Star Film Festival Kicks Off on Thursday, Nov 5th with WHEN I LIVE MY LIFE OVER AGAIN Starring Amber Heard, Christopher Walken

The 2015 Lone Star Film Festival at Sundance Square (LSFF) in Fort Worth, Texas, will kick off on Thursday November 5th, 2015, with the film WHEN I LIVE MY LIFE OVER AGAIN starring Texas native Amber Heard along with a cast that includes Christopher Walken, Oliver Platt, and Kelli Garner. Immediately following; the film’s writer and director, Robert Edwards, will take part in a Q&A. That will be followed by a special presentation screening of the 1972 Oscar nominated, A CLOCKWORK ORANGE with well-known actor for his countless iconic roles, Malcolm McDowell, taking part in a special Q&A before the film. On Friday night the Lone Star Film Society will honor Fort Worth native and Tony Award winner Betty Buckley with the Stephen Bruton Award being presented by T Bone Burnett at its sixth annual Lone Star Film Festival Ball. Also being honored at the event is Malcom McDowell, who will be receiving the Achievement in Film Acting Award. The 2015 NewFest, New York’s LGBT Film Festival, concluded its 27th anniversary year with a sold-out screening of GIRLS LOST. THOSE PEOPLE, directed by Joey Kuhn, won the Audience Award for Outstanding Feature Film, and THE SAME DIFFERENCE, directed by Nneka Onuorah, won the Audience Award for Outstanding Documentary Feature. The French film A Childhood directed by Philippe Claudel won the Gold Hugo for Best Film at the 51st Chicago International Film Festival. In this tender, keenly observed look at growing up in poverty in small town France, 13-year-old Jimmy dreams of a bourgeois life with family vacations and games of tennis. Trapped in an unstable household with a drug-addicted mother and her criminal boyfriend, Jimmy is forced to grow up too quickly. Over the course of a sweltering summer, Jimmy must find moments of hope in a world full of strife. THE DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL, SPOTLIGHT and TANGERINE Lead 25th IFP Gotham Independent Film Awards Nominations

The nominees for the 25th IFP Gotham Independent Film Awards were announced today, signaling the kick-off to the film awards season. For 2015, the eight competitive film awards include Best Feature, Best Documentary, Best Actor, Best Actress (presenting sponsor euphoria Calvin Klein), Breakthrough Actor, Best Screenplay, the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director award, and the Gotham Audience Award. In addition to the competitive awards, Gotham Award Tributes will be given to actors Helen Mirren and Robert Redford, director Todd Haynes, and Industry Tribute recipient producer Steve Golin. Twenty-five films received nominations this year. THE DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL (pictured above) lead with 4 nominations for Best Feature, Best Screenplay, Best Actress and Breakthrough Director. CAROL, SPOTLIGHT and TANGERINE closely followed with 3 nominations each. Carol received nods for Best Feature, Best Screenplay and Best Actress; Spotlight received nods for Best Feature, Best Screenplay and Special Jury Award – Ensemble Performance; and Tangerine also nominated for Best Feature in addition to Breakthrough Actors for Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor. As noted, the nominating committee for the Best Actor and Best Actress categories category voted to award a Special Jury Award jointly to cast members Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber, John Slattery, Stanley Tucci and Brian d’Arcy James for their ensemble work in Spotlight. Beyond these individual actors, the committee cited the Spotlight cast as “an outstanding ensemble in which every performance, in every role, of every size, is beautifully realized.” In recognition of the strong work by female actors this year, the jury also chose to include six nominees for Best Actress. Spotlight on Women Directors ‘Live the Dream’ Grant For the sixth consecutive year, IFP is proud present the euphoria Calvin Klein Spotlight on Women Directors ‘Live the Dream’ grant, a $25,000 cash award for an alumna of IFP’s Independent Filmmaker Labs or IFP’s Screen Forward Lab. In 2015, Screen Forward Lab directors have been included in this opportunity for the first time. This grant aims to further the careers of emerging women directors by supporting the completion, distribution and audience engagement strategies of their first feature film or episodic series.
