    Director Shalini Kantayya’s feature documentary, Coded Bias, that premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival explores the fallout of MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini’s startling discovery that facial recognition does not see dark-skinned faces accurately. As part of a national Science on Screen initiative, Coded Bias will have a virtual cinema release starting at Museum of the Moving Image (MOMI) in Queens, New York (Two week run opening Wednesday 11/11) and Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, MA (Two week run opening Friday 11/18).

    Earlier this month, the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) announced MIFF 68 1⁄2 – a reimagined celebration of film online, following the cancellation of MIFF 2020. The fully-curated program will showcase over 100 films including 12 world premieres, Australian premieres, shorts, Q&As, special events, and more. MIFF 68 1⁄2 will be available to stream in Australia August 6-23.

    The American Film Institute revealed its full slate of films being presented online for the AFI DOCS 2020 festival which runs runs June 17–21. The lineup features 59 films from 11 countries and 12 virtual World Premieres, with 61% of the films directed by women, 25% by POC directors and 14% by LGBTQ directors.

    Amidst the Covid-19 health crisis, for the first time ever, the Human Rights Watch Film Festival will present a digital edition of its full slate of films from June 11​-​20, 2020. Expanding beyond New York City, the festival announced the first eight films of the line up that will enjoy their U.S. Digital Festival Premieres, making the films available nationwide. In keeping with the festival’s long-standing tradition of contextualizing films with conversations, online screenings will feature in-depth discussions with filmmakers, film subjects and Human Rights Watch researchers. The festival plans to return to Film at Lincoln Center and IFC Center next year and beyond.
