The International Documentary Association (IDA) unveiled the shortlist for this year’s IDA Documentary Awards. The shortlist was selected from more than 700 entries across all categories, representing 77 countries.

Movies Released on Friday October 25, From Vatican Thriller ‘Conclave’ to Berlinale-Winning Documentary ‘Dahomey’
Arriving in US theaters this weekend on Friday, October 25th is a diverse lineup of films from award-contenders to a superhero popcorn flick. Oscar-winning director of All Quiet on the Western Front, Edward Berger, returns this week with the Ralph Fiennes-starred thriller Conclave. Adam Elliot’s clay stop-motion animation Memoir of a Snail, exploring grief in a unique way. Mati Diop’s Dahomey, a documentary on stolen African artifacts won the top prize of Golden Bear at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival. Alonso Ruizpalacios’ La Cocina shows the nightmare of working in a fine-dining restaurant as an immigrant, starring Oscar-nominated actress Rooney Mara. For the lighthearted films, modern-day Beauty and the Beast, Your Monster, starring Melissa Barrera, and Stavros Halkias-led comedy Let’s Start a Cult are also coming to the big screen. Daisey Ridley-led neo-noir, Magpie, brings suspense to the theaters, and for fans of superhero movies, Venom: The Last Dance closes the Venom trilogy movies.

38th AFI FEST to Showcase Lineup of 158 Films
Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point directed by Tyler Taormina This year’s 38th AFI FEST taking place in Los Angeles from October 23 to October 27 rounds out the slate of already announced titles with a full lineup of 158 films including September 5 directed by Tim Fehlbaum, All We Imagine As Light directed by Payal Kapadia, The Luckiest Man In America directed by Samir Oliveros (AFI Class of 2019), Zurawski V Texas from executive producers Hillary Clinton, Chelsea Clinton and Jennifer Lawrence and directors Maisie Crow and Abbie Perrault, and Oh, Canada directed by Paul Schrader (AFI Class of 1969).

Dahomey by Mati Diop (screenshot / Mubi) After winning the Grand Prix at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival for ‘Atlantics,’ director Mati Diop’s second feature film ‘Dahomey,’ is a documentary blending reality and fiction telling the story of 26 historical treasures from The Kingdom of Dahomey being returned to its home country after they were taken during the French colonial period. The film features narration for the artifacts, as they tell their stories of being taken and returned.
